Jennifer Capriati: Archived News 2000

28th December 2000 (Jennifer Capriati WebSite)

Welcome to http://www.capriati.co.uk! Hopefully this is where the page will stay for a while now!?! Sorry for all the hassle, at least it all happened during the off-season! Changes have been taking place in the draw for the Hong Kong exhibition as well following the withdrawal of an injured Anke Huber. Chanda Rubin replaces her, and becomes the 3rd-seed. Jennifer dips to 4th-seed, and though she still faces Jing-Qian Yi, she does so in the top half of the draw now, so the winner will face either top seed Anna Kournikova or Olga Barabanschikova.

22nd December 2000 (Hong Kong)

Jennifer Capriati is seeded third at the Hong Kong exhibition, beginning January 3rd. She is, of course, the defending champion. In the quarter-finals of the eight-player draw she will face Jing-Qian Yi of China (WTA #94). The winner will face either Lisa Raymond or 2nd-seed Elena Dementieva. Anna Kournikova is the top seed. In doubles, Jennifer will team with Elena Dementieva of Russia (WTA Doubles #NR), and the pair are the 2nd-seeds, which is strange as Dementieva doesn't appear to have a doubles ranking. They take on Jennifer's former doubles partner Jelena Dokic of Australia (WTA Doubles #50) and Olga Barabanschikova of Belarus (WTA Doubles #296) in the semi-finals of the four-team doubles draw.

16th December 2000 (Jennifer Capriati WebSite)

Since I will never have a complete record of Jennifer Capriati's exhibition results, I have taken them out of the singles and doubles career results section and given them their own little sections - Exhibition Singles and Exhibition Doubles. Please keep sending me details of any exhibition matches and events featuring Jennifer that I have not got listed. The search will go on!

14th December 2000 (Atlanta)

Jennifer Capriati has withdrawn from the World Team Tennis exhibition with 'flu. Please note that I will no longer be forwarding e-mail onto Jennifer via her agent, as I have had not one response from IMG in three years and cannot guarantee that your mail is being received.

12th December 2000 (Atlanta)

Jennifer Capriati joins Pete Sampras, Todd Woodbridge and Mariann De Swardt on Elton John's team for the World Team Tennis Smash Hits Charity Exhibition. They will face Billie Jean King's team of Mary Pierce, Andre Agassi, Jelena Dokic and Luke Jensen in men's singles, women's singles, men's doubles, women's doubles and mixed doubles matches on Thursday in Atlanta.

9th December 2000 (Atlanta)

Having said that all was quiet on the Jennifer Capriati news front - here is some! Jennifer and sometime doubles partner Jelena Dokic have replaced an injured Monica Seles and Lindsay Davenport in Billie Jean King and Elton John's annual World Team Tennis Smash Hits Charity Exhibition, to be held this year on December 14 in Atlanta. Pete Sampras, Andre Agassi and Mary Pierce will also be there. Jennifer could be playing singles, doubles, or mixed doubles, so watch this space for more details!

8th December 2000 (Jennifer Capriati WebSite)

I have added new stuff to the Rankings section of this site. You can now see Jennifer's complete career WTA singles and doubles rankings there. All is quiet on the Jennifer news front. She will be back in January at Hong Kong, followed by Sydney and the Australian Open.

30th November 2000 (Goodbye www.capriati.com)

I welcome you one and all to the new temporary home of the Jennifer Capriati WebSite. I am currently sorting out a new, easier-to-remember domain name! Sorry about all the hassle, but it was a very sudden decision of my previous sponsors to close down the site. I hope you all found your way here!?!

25th November 2000 (Fed Cup)

When Lindsay Davenport defeated Conchita Martinez and handed the USA the Fed Cup 2000 title, Jennifer Capriati was drafted in to play the two 'dead' rubbers. In the remaining singles match, Jennifer was leading 6-1 1-0 against Arantxa Sanchez Vicario of Spain (WTA #9), when the Spaniard withdrew citing stomach trouble. Jennifer then teamed with Lisa Raymond of the United States (WTA Doubles #5) to defeat Spaniards Virginia Ruano Pascual (WTA Doubles #10) and Magui Serna (WTA Doubles #63) 4-6 6-4 6-2 in the final match of the best-of-5 series, giving the United States a comprehensive 5:0 win over Spain.

23rd November 2000 (Fed Cup)

Following the wins by Monica Seles and Lindsay Davenport over Justine Henin and Kim Clijsters that sent the USA into the Fed Cup final, Jennifer Capriati replaced Lindsay Davenport in the final 'dead' doubles match with Lisa Raymond of the United States (WTA Doubles #5) against Els Callens (WTA Doubles #15) and Dominique Van Roost (WTA Doubles #21) of Belgium. Van Roost, however, was not about to lose her last ever professional match, and she and Callens salvaged one win for the Belgians, winning 6-3 7-5. However, the match was Jennifer's first Fed Cup appearance since 1996, and her 79th singles and doubles tour match this year, a new record for her. Jennifer has not been selected to play when the USA take on Spain in the Fed Cup final on November 24th and 25th, but she may again get to play in a 'dead' rubber.

21st November 2000 (Fed Cup)

Jennifer Capriati might not play for the USA in the Fed Cup semi-final tie against Belgium. Monica Seles will play Justine Henin and Lindsay Davenport will play Kim Clijsters, before the closing doubles match between Davenport/Lisa Raymond and Els Callens/Dominique Van Roost. Presumably though, Jennifer will replace Davenport in the doubles if the USA have an unassailable 2:0 lead.

20th November 2000 (Sanex WTA Rankings)

The end-of-year rankings have been published and Jennifer finishes the year at #14 in singles (#23 in 1999) and #58 in doubles (#199 in 1999). In the doubles team rankings she finishes the year at #36 with Jelena Dokic. She reached the last-eight or better at seven WTA tournaments (two in 1999), winning one WTA title at Luxembourg (two in 1999 - Strasbourg and Quebec) and finishing runner-up in Quebec. In Grand Slams, Jennifer was a semi-finalist at the Australian Open, and reached the fourth round at Wimbledon and the US Open (best 1999 Grand Slam performances: 4th round at French and US Opens). Jennifer maintained a Top 20 ranking from January 31st onwards, and reached a post-1996 comeback ranking high of #12 in singles on two occasions this year. In 1999 Jennifer's biggest wins were over Nathalie Tauziat, Conchita Martinez and an injured Steffi Graf. This year she has beaten Martina Hingis, Mary Pierce, Serena Williams and Anna Kournikova. Money-wise Jennifer earned $488,861 in 2000, her highest year earnings since 1991, and was only $13,000 short of earning as much as she had in 1996-1999 combined. In January she passed the $2m career earnings mark. Jennifer also played a total of 78 singles and doubles matches, equalling her previous high year tally of 1991. Her tally of 35 singles wins was her best since she achieved the same number in 1991, and her 14 wins in doubles was second only to her 1991 total. Plus, her total of 20 WTA tournaments played this year is far and away her most busy season on the Tour. As in 1999, Jennifer won one exhibition title, in Hong Kong (Mahwah last year). She finished the year with her first appearance at the Chase Championships since 1992 and her first Fed Cup selection since 1996. Not a bad year, really! Here's to an even better 2001!!!

19th November 2000 (Jennifer Capriati WebSite)

I have added an easy reference guide to Jennifer Capriati's singles and doubles win-loss records against all the players she has faced across court. Go to the Index and click on 'By Opponent: Complete'. Enjoy! If you visit the Jennifer Capriati WebBoard, then please take time to vote about it at the Poll Page. Thanks!

18th November 2000 (Fed Cup)

Jennifer Capriati's tennis year is not quite over! She has been selected to replace an injured Chanda Rubin on the USA Fed Cup team for next week's semi-final and, hopefully, final in Las Vegas. The USA face Belgium in the semi-finals, beginning on November 22. This is the first time Jennifer has been selected for the Fed Cup team since 1996. Presumably this means that Jennifer will now not be making a personal appearance at the Baltimore exhibition on the previous day.

16th November 2000 (Sanex WTA Rankings)

Elena Dementieva's upset victory over Lindsay Davenport at the Chase Championships first round means that Jennifer will now finish the year as World #14. I'm not sure, but I don't think that Kim Clijsters can overtake her as well.

15th November 2000 (Chase Championships)

Jennifer Capriati ended her 2000 WTA Tour year with a 4-6 4-6 first round loss to Anna Kournikova at the Chase Championships. Jennifer can be proud though of a great year which culminated in her first Chase appearance in eight years. Here's to a fantastic 2001!

14th November 2000 (Baltimore)

Regardless of the outcome of their first round Chase Championships match, there will be no rematch for Jennifer Capriati and Anna Kournikova at the Baltimore exhibition next week after Kournikova withdrew with tiredness! She was replaced by Pete Sampras!?! Sadly organisers were not happy with the prospect of a Capriati-Sampras match, and replaced Jennifer with Todd Martin. Jennifer will still make a personal appearance at the event, but is unlikely now to play any matches. Disappointing. More news in the Baltimore forum at the Jennifer Capriati WebBoard.

13th November 2000 (Chase Championships)

Jennifer Capriati will face Anna Kournikova on Tuesday at 8pm in the first round of the Chase Championships.

10th November 2000 (Philadelphia/Fed Cup)

Julie Halard-Decugis defeated Jennifer Capriati 6-4 6-1 in the second round at Philadelphia. Jennifer has not been named to the Fed Cup team. The team will consist of Lindsay Davenport, Monica Seles, Chanda Rubin and Lisa Raymond.

9th November 2000 (Chase Championships)

Jennifer Capriati will face 7th-seed Anna Kournikova of Russia (WTA #10) in the first round of the Chase Championships. At their last meeting, Jennifer defeated the Russian in straight sets, but Kournikova won both of their first two meetings. Venus Williams, Serena Williams, Mary Pierce and Anke Huber all withdrew from the end-of-year event with injuries. Jennifer and Kournikova are scheduled to meet again on November 21 at the Baltimore exhibition, but with the Fed Cup team announced imminently and Jennifer's name in the running, that meeting may be cancelled.

8th November 2000 (Philadelphia)

Jennifer Capriati fought her way through to the second round in Philadelphia with a 3-6 7-5 6-4 win over Meghann Shaughnessy. Next up is Julie Halard-Decugis of France (WTA #18), who loves playing the indoor courts, and defeated Jennifer at their last indoor meeting in Zurich at the end of the 1999 season. Worth noting is the fact that Jennifer has played 76 WTA singles and doubles matches this year. That is just two away from her record, set in 1991. To put it into perspective, and show Jennifer's dedication to the game this year, Jennifer played only 46 singles and doubles matches in 1999! The possibilities are opening up at the Chase Championships. Serena Williams and Anke Huber have withdrawn which, coupled with the fact that Monica Seles and Mary Pierce will be returning after injury lay-offs, must give Jennifer high hopes for the last WTA event of 2000.

7th November 2000 (Chase Championships)

Jennifer Capriati has now officially qualified for the season-ending 16-player Chase Championships of the WTA Tour. Congratulations!!! It is the first time since 1993 that Jennifer has finished the year inside the Top 16 and thus qualified for the end-of-year Championships. Jennifer did not participate in 1993 as she had already temporarily left the tour in August of that year, so this will be the first time since 1992 that she will take part. It won't be easy though, in the first round she will have to face one of the year's Top 8 players!?! Good luck to you, Jen! It is so lovely to see you back at the Chase Championships where you belong!

5th November 2000 (Quebec)

Disappointment for Jennifer Capriati, who lost 4-6 2-6 to Chanda Rubin in the final at Quebec. Congratulations though to Chanda, who has been improving all year and look's set for the Top 10 again in 2001. Hopefully Jennifer will be fit enough to play Philadelphia next week, where she takes on Meghann Shaughnessy in the first round. Shaughnessy will also be tired from playing Quebec. She won the doubles there with Nicole Pratt. Oh yeah, a belated congratulations to Jennifer who claimed her 250th singles win on the WTA Tour when she beat Jana Nejedly in the second round at Quebec. Also, I just discovered that on the same day Jennifer won her first title of 2000 at Luxembourg, her boyfriend Xavier Malisse won his first title of the year at the San Antonio Challenger!

4th November 2000 (Quebec)

Jennifer Capriati advanced to a repeat of last year's final against 2nd-seed Chanda Rubin of the United States (WTA #13) by struggling past 4th-seed Amy Frazier in three sets. Worried by shoulder and ankle injuries, that hopefully won't affect her appearance in tomorrow's final and in further events this year, Jennifer lost 5-3 leads in the second and third sets (having recovered from 0-2 down in the final set), but managed to hold her nerve to grind out a tense 3-6 7-5 7-5 victory over Frazier. Chanda Rubin had an easier time of it, once she'd recovered from 0-4 in the first set, winning 7-5 6-1 against Meilin Tu. Jennifer Capriati leads Chanda Rubin 7:3 in career meetings, but Rubin won their most recent meeting in Filderstadt 6-0 6-7 (11-13) 6-2. In the Quebec final last year, Jennifer won 4-6 6-1 6-2. She and Chanda Rubin have had similar years, and both are ranked side-by-side and looking to regain Top 10 places in 2001. Should be an interesting final.

3rd November 2000 (Quebec)

Jennifer Capriati defeated home favourite Sonya Jeyaseelan 7-5 6-0 to advance to the semi-finals in Quebec. There she will face 4th-seed Amy Frazier of the United States (WTA #19). Jennifer has a 2:0 career win:loss record over Frazier, and the last time they met was at exactly the same stage of the Quebec tournament last year, Jennifer winning 2-6 6-0 7-5.

3rd November 2000 (Philadelphia)

Can you believe it! Jennifer has barely got the defence of her Quebec title underway and the draw for her next tournament is released!?! Jennifer is the 8th-seed at Philadelphia, following the withdrawal of Monica Seles, and takes on Meghann Shaughnessy of the United States (WTA #36) in the first round. Shaughnessy is fresh from her first title of the year at Shanghai a few weeks ago. The winner of that match will face either Julie Halard-Decugis or Fabiola Zuluaga in the second round, and Jennifer is seeded to meet 4th-seed Nathalie Tauziat in the quarterfinals and top seed Martina Hingis in the semi-finals. Tauziat's only career win over Jennifer came at Philadelphia last year in the second round.

2nd November 2000 (Quebec)

Jennifer Capriati advanced to the quarterfinals at Quebec with a 6-4 7-6 (7-3) win over Jana Nejedly. Jennifer recovered from 1-4 down in the second set, and will face another Canadian, Sonya Jeyaseelan (WTA #56), in the last-eight. Jeyaseelan defeated 6th-seed Meghann Shaugnessy in the second round to advance to her first WTA quarterfinal of the year.

1st November 2000 (Quebec)

Congratulations to Jennifer Capriati. For the first time in her career she is the top seed at a tournament! She is this week back at her 2000 high WTA singles ranking of #12, which she first reached on May 1. After a first round bye at Quebec, where she is also defending champion, she will face Jana Nejedly of Canada (WTA #68) in the second round. Nejedly needed three sets to dispose of lucky loser Janet Lee in the first round. Jennifer is not playing doubles at Quebec. Also, Jennifer could be in line for a place in the American squad for the Fed Cup semi-finals and final, to be held between November 21 and 25 in Las Vegas. Monica Seles and Lindsay Davenport have been named to the team already, but Venus and Serena Williams are currently back at school and may not be able to play. Billie Jean King has said that Jennifer is a possible team member, and that the full team will be announced by November 10. Jennifer is currently scheduled to play an exhibition match against Anna Kournikova in Baltimore on the first day of the Fed Cup event.

23rd October 2000 (Quebec)

I shall be on holiday in Cyprus from 26th October to 1st November so obviously this site will not be updated during that time. Hopefully Jennifer fans will keep everyone informed on what is happening with Jennifer at Quebec on the Jennifer Capriati WebBoard. Follow the link above. In the latest Sanex WTA singles rankings, Jennifer moves up one place to #13 after an injured Anke Huber fell below her, unable to defend points from last year. Injury will help Jennifer climb to #12 next week, equalling her 2000 best ranking, when injured Sandrine Testud loses ranking points and drops below her also.

16th October 2000 (Sanex WTA Rankings)

Jennifer Capriati moves back up to #14 in the latest WTA singles rankings, and she is currently in 13th position for the 16-player end-of-year Chase Championships. In next week's singles rankings, Jennifer will leapfrog Anke Huber who is injured and unable to defend points from last year, but she may still remain at #14 if Chanda Rubin does well in Linz.

14th October 2000 (Zurich)

In a high quality match, closer than the score might suggest, Jennifer Capriati lost to World #1 Martina Hingis 3-6 2-6 in the Zurich semi-finals. A win over Hingis would have given Jennifer her first Top 10 singles ranking since July 1994. Nevertheless, by reaching the last-four at Zurich, Jennifer will improve her ranking to #14 next week, and has risen to 13th position in the Race to the Chase 2000 rankings which will determine the sixteen players who participate in the end-of-year Chase Championships. Jennifer is now taking two weeks off, before returning on October 30th to defend her title at Quebec.

13th October 2000 (Zurich)

Jennifer Capriati advanced into the semi-finals at Zurich with a great 7-6 (7-4) 6-4 win over 4th-seed Anna Kournikova, despite losing momentum a little in the second set. Having had two match points at 5-1, Jennifer let Kournikova back into the match, allowing her three games in a row, before serving out the match at 5-4 for her first win in three meetings with the Russian. Jennifer will now face an ever tougher test in the shape of top seed and World #1 Martina Hingis of Switzerland. Hingis has been seemingly unstoppable since she returned after several weeks off. Last week, for instance, she defeated Arantxa Sanchez Vicario 6-1 6-0. Jennifer will be hoping to avoid the same fate, preferring, I expect, to repeat the win she gained over Hingis back in January at the Hong Kong exhibition.

12th October 2000 (Zurich)

A great win for Jennifer Capriati today. After five three set matches in a row over her past three tournaments, she defeated Anne-Gaelle Sidot 6-3 6-1 to advance to the Zurich quarterfinals where she will face 4th-seed Anna Kournikova of Russia (WTA #13). They have played twice before, and Kournikova has won both times. They will also face each other in November, at a charity exhibition match in Baltimore.

11th October 2000 (Zurich)

Jennifer Capriati was asked in her chat session at Zurich if she had a website. Her answer: 'Not an official one, but I would like to have one soon'. Hardly very inspiring for me, eh?

10th October 2000 (Zurich)

Jennifer Capriati just barely managed to scrape through her first round match with wildcard Lina Krasnoroutskaya. Jennifer let 4-1 and 5-3 leads in the opening set slip away from her, and, though she recovered to win the second set, then found herself 1-4 down in the final set. An attack of the nerves for Krasnoroutskaya, with victory in sight, helped Jennifer level at 4-4, but after that her serve deserted her (the match in total contained sixteen double faults from Jennifer!?!) and it was a typically knife-edge, nailbiting performance. Jennifer gained her first match point late in the final set tiebreak, having saved four match points against her, and converted it to grind out a 5-7 6-3 7-6 (8-6) winner. The match was not only tense because of the tennis though. Tempers frayed as Krasnoroutskaya repeatedly held up Jennifer's service games, and then began to shout 'Come on!', clench her fists and glare at Jennifer after seemingly every single point at various points in the match. Jennifer began to yell 'Come on' herself after hard-fought points, and then joined in the lack of sportsmanship on show by refusing to shake the Russian's hand at the end of the match, though she did seem sorry for doing that in her post-match interview. Read more about the match at the Jennifer Capriati WebBoard under the Zurich forum. All in all, a shaky performance, but Jennifer squeezed through it. She will need to be well rested, and much improved for the second round though. There she will face Anne-Gaelle Sidot of France (WTA #28). They are 1:1 in meetings so far this year, with Jennifer winning the most recent one in three sets in Luxembourg a fortnight ago.

7th October 2000 (Zurich)

Jennifer Capriati is indeed the 6th-seed at Zurich next week. She faces wildcard Lina Krasnoroutskaya of Russia (WTA #113) in the first round. Though Krasnoroutskaya is undoubtedly a star of the future, she has only managed to compile a 4:9 win:loss record so far this year. The winner of the Capriati-Krasnoroutskaya match will face either Anne-Gaelle Sidot of France or a qualifier in the second round. Jennifer is seeded to meet Anna Kournikova in the quarterfinals, and World #1 Martina Hingis in the semi-finals.

6th October 2000 (Zurich)

Due to a handful of big names withdrawing from next week's Zurich event, Jennifer Capriati should be seeded 6th, and will therefore avoid another first round confrontation with the likes of Chanda Rubin!

5th October 2000 (Baltimore)

Jennifer Capriati has entered the Chevy Chase Bank Tennis Challenge on November 21. She will play Anna Kournikova in a one-off exhibition match. More details at the Jennifer Capriati WebBoard, follow the link above. Thanks to Jeff Schneider for alerting me to the existence of this event!

2nd October 2000 (Luxembourg)

Jennifer Capriati has lost in the first round at Filderstadt. Chanda Rubin defeated her in a topsy turvy battle, eventually winning 6-0 6-7 (11-13) 6-2. Jennifer lost the first set in just 17 minutes, and must be feeling the effects of three three-set matches on her way to the title at Luxembourg. Nevertheless, it is a very disappointing result for Jennifer, who had a reasonably good draw at Filderstadt. Her loss also means that Amelie Mauresmo and Chanda Rubin will overtake her again in the rankings, and that her participation in the end-of-year Chase Championships is once again in doubt. At least she has plenty of time to rest before next week's Zurich event.

1st October 2000 (Luxembourg)

Jennifer Capriati wins Luxembourg 2000

Congratulations Jennifer!!!

Jennifer Capriati won her ninth WTA singles title with a 4-6 6-1 6-4 win over Magdalena Maleeva in the final at Luxembourg. Jennifer cannot rest for too long though as she has to contend with 7th-seed Chanda Rubin of the United States (WTA #16) in the first round at Filderstadt next week!

30th September 2000 (Luxembourg)

Jennifer Capriati will be aiming for a ninth WTA singles title tomorrow when she faces 7th-seed Magdalena Maleeva of Bulgaria (WTA #38) in the final at Luxembourg. Jennifer advanced with a 6-4 2-6 6-2 win over wildcard Barbara Rittner, while Maleeva dashed the debut title hopes of Anna Kournikova with a remarkably easy 6-2 6-4 victory. Capriati and Maleeva have met on seven occasions, with Jennifer winning five times, including a 6-3 6-1 victory at their most recent meeting at 's-Hertogenbosch earlier this year.

29th September 2000 (Luxembourg)

Jennifer Capriati scraped through to the semi-finals in Luxembourg with a hard-fought 7-5 6-7 (6-8) 6-3 win over 6th-seed Anne-Gaelle Sidot of France, who had won their one previous meeting. In the last-four, Jennifer will face wildcard Barbara Rittner of Germany (WTA #130). The last time they met, in 1998, Rittner won in three sets.

28th September 2000 (Luxembourg)

Jennifer Capriati eased into the quarterfinals at Luxembourg with a 6-2 7-5 win over Maria Antonia Sanchez Lorenzo of Spain. There she will meet 6th-seed Anne-Gaelle Sidot of France (WTA #32). At Rome earlier this year, in their only previous meeting, Sidot defeated Capriati in straight sets. However, Jennifer was just returning from injury, had just split with coach Harold Solomon and was enjoying the first weeks of her relationship with Xavier Malisse. All these factors must have helped contribute to the loss. Jennifer will be hoping for a win this time against Sidot when they meet tomorrow.

27th September 2000 (Luxembourg)

Jennifer Capriati defeated Jelena Kostanic of Croatia 6-4 6-2 to move into the second round at Luxembourg. There she will face Maria Antonia Sanchez Lorenzo of Spain (WTA #103). They have met once before, at the Australian Open in 1999, and Sanchez Lorenzo won in straight sets.

23rd September 2000 (Luxembourg)

Jennifer Capriati is seeded third at Luxembourg. In the first round she plays talented youngster, Jelena Kostanic of Croatia (WTA #111), with the winner to face either Erika De Lone or Maria Antonia Sanchez Lorenzo. Jennifer is in the same half of the draw as top seed Nathalie Tauziat. The doubles draw has been announced, and sadly Jennifer is not in it, and neither is Anna Kournikova, whom she partnered at the US Open. I was hoping they would team up again. Jennifer will begin her quest for a ninth WTA title on Wednesday against Kostanic.

11th September 2000 (US Open)

Elena Dementieva's tremendous run through to the US Open semifinals has pushed Jennifer Capriati down to #18 in the latest Sanex WTA singles rankings and down to #17 in the Race to the Chase 2000 rankings.

3rd September 2000 (US Open)

Monica Seles defeated Jennifer Capriati 6-3 6-4.

2nd September 2000 (US Open)

The years of experience of wildcard team Martina Navratilova of the United States (WTA Doubles #88) and Arantxa Sanchez Vicario of Spain (WTA Doubles #12) proved way too much as they walked all over Jennifer Capriati and Anna Kournikova 7-5 6-0 in their second round women's doubles match at the US Open. Anna Kournikova didn't manage to hold serve at all, and despite a tight first set, where Jennifer won all her service games, the duo fell apart in the second set, giving Jennifer her worst Grand Slam doubles showing of the year. She and Jelena Dokic reached the third round of all three of the other Slams this year.

1st September 2000 (US Open)

Jennifer Capriati sped into the fourth round, defeating Adriana Gersi 6-2 6-3. In the last-16, Jennifer will face 6th-seed Monica Seles of the United States (WTA #5), who needed three tight sets to see off Chanda Rubin in her third round match. Jennifer and Monica last played a few weeks ago in Mahwah, where Seles won 6-4 6-4. Sorry, but the Jennifer Capriati WebBoard seems to be out of action at the moment. Typical for it to go wrong during a Grand Slam event, and the WTA site and message board seems to be down as well. What are we to do!?!

31st August 2000 (US Open)

Jennifer Capriati and Anna Kournikova began their US Open doubles campaign well with a 6-1 6-4 win over Rita Grande and Emilie Loit in the first round. In the first set it was only the fifth game that proved problematic, when at 4-0 up Jennifer lost her serve on the sixth break point against her. In the other six games of the first set Jennifer and Anna only lost three points! The second set was tougher, Jennifer again dropping her serve, this time at 3-2 up, but it was Jennifer who held her nerve when serving for the match to take them into a second round encounter with the legendary Martina Navratilova and fellow veteran Arantxa Sanchez Vicario who needed a final set tiebreak to see off Sabine Appelmans and Linda Wild in their first round match. Chanda Rubin's successes so far mean that she is almost guaranteed to move ahead of Jennifer in the rankings following the US Open, but with Amy Frazier, Julie Halard-Decugis and Barbara Schett already out, Jennifer is unlikely to fall further than #17.

30th August 2000 (US Open)

Jennifer Capriati stormed into the US Open third round with a straightforward 6-2 6-2 defeat of Henrieta Nagyova. Jennifer will now meet Adriana Gersi of the Czech Republic (WTA #67), who advanced to the third round when Nathalie Dechy withdrew injured from their second round match after losing the first set tiebreak. The mixed doubles draw has been announced and neither Jennifer Capriati or Xavier Malisse are entered.

28th August 2000 (US Open)

Jennifer Capriati defeated Emmanuelle Gagliardi 6-4 6-0 in the US Open first round. Jennifer led 6-4 1-0 when play was stopped for two hours due to rain. She had recovered from 0-2 in the opening set, eventually breaking back to level at 3-3, and then broke Gagliardi at 5-4 for the set. When play resumed, Jennifer reeled off five games in a row to move into the second round, where she will meet Henrieta Nagyova of Slovakia (WTA #70).

27th August 2000 (US Open)

Jennifer Capriati's first round match against Emmanuelle Gagliardi is the first match on the Louis Armstrong Court on Monday. Jennifer was one of the star attractions at the Arthur Ashe Kid's Day which is always held on the Saturday before the US Open begins. This year she teamed with Alexandra Stevenson for an exhibition doubles match against Luke and Murphy Jensen. They only played a tiebreak for a bit of fun, and at 5-5 decided to play a sudden-death shoot out point, which the Jensen brothers won, so they won the tiebreak 6-5. Thanks to Magassi and Mike Danner for providing me with the result.

25th August 2000 (US Open)

Jennifer Capriati has teamed up with Anna Kournikova of Russia (WTA Doubles #7) in the US Open doubles event. Kournikova ended 1999 as World Doubles #1. Jennifer and Anna are the 14th seeds, and face Rita Grande of Italy (WTA Doubles #39) and Emilie Loit of France (WTA Doubles #44) in the first round. A possible second round encounter with Martina Navratilova and Arantxa Sanchez Vicario awaits the winner. It's quite a surprising team-up. I hadn't expected Jennifer and Jelena Dokic to double-up again, since I thought Dokic would be getting in some Olympic preparation with Rennae Stubbs. I guess though that Lisa Raymond is fed up enough with the Olympics, so Stubbs decided to stick with her regular partner. Dokic has instead teamed with Amanda Hopmans. Jennifer and Jelena Dokic reached the third round at the Australian Open, the French Open and Wimbledon this year.

23rd August 2000 (US Open)

Jennifer Capriati, the 15th seed at the US Open, has received a very comfortable draw for the first week of the US Open. In the first round she will play Emmanuelle Gagliardi of Switzerland (WTA #80), with the winner facing either former Top 30 player Henrieta Nagyova of Slovakia (WTA #70) or talented newcomer Miroslava Vavrinec of Switzerland (WTA #100). In the third round Cara Black (WTA #36) or Nathalie Dechy (WTA #21) are possible opponents. In the second week things will get more difficult for Jennifer if she gets through the early rounds. She is seeded to meet Monica Seles (WTA #6) in the last-16 and World #1 Martina Hingis in the quarterfinals.

21st August 2000 (US Open)

Jennifer Capriati is the 15th seed at the US Open, the first time she has been seeded in her home country's Grand Slam since 1993. Following the US Open she has a full schedule, calling at Luxembourg, Filderstadt and Zurich on a quest for WTA ranking points and a position at the end-of-year Chase Championships.

17th August 2000 (Montreal)

In a sensational match of long rallies and powerful groundstrokes, Jennifer Capriati saved two match points at 4-6 4-5 down, before losing 4-6 5-7 to Arantxa Sanchez Vicario. Nevertheless, the match will send Jennifer into the US Open in high spirits. The second set was a tremendous display of tennis from both, and Jennifer should be mightily proud of the nerves of steel she showed in pasting the lines with a succession of shots on each of the match points against her at 4-6 4-5. Chanda Rubin and Julie Halard-Decugis joined Jennifer on the sidelines, thus ensuring her of a US Open seeding. Jennifer's losing ways continued as she and Dominique Van Roost lost 6-7 (6-8) 0-6 to Chanda Rubin and Sandrine Testud in the women's doubles second round. Out in Indianapolis on the ATP Tour, Jennifer's boyfriend, Xavier Malisse, caught the losing blues as well!

16th August 2000 (Montreal)

Jennifer Capriati had another tough battle on her hands, but survived again, defeating qualifier Virginia Ruano-Pascual 3-6 6-1 6-4, recovering from 0-3 and 1-4 in the final set, to advance to a third round showdown with 7th-seed Arantxa Sanchez Vicario of Spain (WTA #9). In doubles, Jennifer's battles continued as she and Dominique Van Roost slumped badly in the second set, before charging back to defeat Asa Carlsson and Sonya Jeyaseelan 7-5 0-6 6-1 in the first round. They will next face 3rd-seeds Chanda Rubin of the United States (WTA Doubles #12) and Sandrine Testud of France (WTA Doubles #9).

15th August 2000 (Montreal/US Open)

Jennifer Capriati had to fight back from 2-4 down in each set to defeat Tathiana Garbin of Italy 7-6 (7-5) 7-6 (7-1) in the first round at Montreal. In the second round she will face Virginia Ruano-Pascual of Spain (WTA #102), who qualified for the event. Julie Halard-Decugis and Amy Frazier, who can potentially affect Jennifer's chances of being seeded at the US Open, won their first round matches at Montreal, as did Chanda Rubin yesterday. Jennifer needs to do as well as or better than two of those three players to ensure a US Open seeding. Barbara Schett, who could also have overtaken her in the rankings, has lost her first round match.

14th August 2000 (Montreal)

Jennifer Capriati has teamed with Dominique Van Roost of Belgium (WTA Doubles #29) for the doubles event at Montreal. They play Asa Carlsson of Sweden (WTA Doubles #31) and Sonya Jeyaseelan of Canada (WTA Doubles #66) in the first round, with the winners to face 3rd-seeds Chanda Rubin and Sandrine Testud. Nice to see Jennifer playing so much doubles this year.

12th August 2000 (Montreal/US Open)

Jennifer Capriati is the 13th-seed at Montreal, and begins her campaign against Tathiana Garbin of Italy (WTA #44) in the first round. The winner will face qualifier, Virginia Ruano-Pascual of Spain in the second round, with 7th-seed Arantxa Sanchez Vicario a likely third round opponent, and 2nd-seed Lindsay Davenport likely to be waiting in the quarterfinals. Jennifer's chances of being seeded at the US Open this year have been helped by Julie Halard-Decugis' early loss at Los Angeles where she was runner-up last year, and Amelie Mauresmo's withdrawal from the year's final Grand Slam.

4th August 2000 (San Diego)

Lindsay Davenport and Anna Kournikova defeated Jennifer Capriati and Amy Frazier 6-4 6-2 in the San Diego doubles quarterfinals.

3rd August 2000 (San Diego)

Anna Kournikova's win over Lindsay Davenport at San Diego has ensured that Jennifer Capriati will not move back into the Top 16 next week, and means that she will remain outside of the US Open seeding positions, with the year's final Grand Slam only a few weeks away.

2nd August 2000 (San Diego)

Jennifer Capriati and Amy Frazier moved into the quarterfinals of the doubles at San Diego, with a 4-6 6-3 6-3 win over the two French Nathalie's: Dechy and Tauziat. Lindsay Davenport and Anna Kournikova, the 2nd-seeds, are likely to be their last-eight opponents.

1st August 2000 (San Diego)

Jennifer Capriati may be wishing she had played Stanford now, after crashing out 4-6 0-6 to Elena Likhovtseva in the first round at San Diego. Her next scheduled WTA stop is Montreal in two weeks, but she is still playing doubles at San Diego with Amy Frazier. The loss could seriously threaten her chances of being seeded at the US Open. Disappointing.

31st July 2000 (San Diego)

Jennifer Capriati is playing doubles at San Diego with Amy Frazier of the United States (WTA Doubles #61). They face French duo Nathalie Dechy (WTA Doubles #62) and Nathalie Tauziat (WTA Doubles #14) in the first round. The winners are likely to face 2nd-seeds Lindsay Davenport and Anna Kournikova in the quarterfinals. Now that the US hardcourt season is upon us this site will be a little out-of-date as I cannot update it until the evenings UK time, so make sure you keep checking out the Jennifer Capriati WebBoard for latest results.

29th July 2000 (San Diego)

Having missed last week's Stanford event, where her draw was quite kind, Jennifer Capriati returns unseeded at San Diego with a tougher draw. In the first round she will face Elena Likhovtseva of Russia (WTA #25), and could face 6th-seed Nathalie Tauziat of France in the second round. Should she get to the quarterfinals then Lindsay Davenport is her likely opponent.

27th July 2000 (Sydney Olympics)

Serena Williams has been named to the US team for the upcoming Sydney Olympics, laying to rest the slim possibility that Jennifer Capriati could have a belated chance to defend her 1992 gold medal. There would now need to be injuries to two players for Jennifer to be given a chance to play, which seems unlikely.

24th July 2000 (Stanford)

Jennifer Capriati has indeed withdrawn from Stanford, citing the following reason: "American Jennifer Capriati was forced out of the tournament after suffering a strained left quadricep in an exhibition this past weekend in Mahwah, New Jersey." Given that she knew that she was missing Stanford before the match with Seles at Mahwah I think we wouldn't be too far wrong in using the word 'excuse'!!! Jennifer will return to WTA action at San Diego next week. Given that she has slipped to #16 in this week's rankings and that she is only scheduled to appear at two WTA events before the US Open, her decision to skip Stanford, where she had a very appealing draw, may turn out to be a bad one. She will slip to at least #17 next week by not playing Stanford, and thus out of the seedings positions for the US Open.

22nd July 2000 (Stanford)

One of the website's fans, Daniel Stern, met Jennifer Capriati after her match against Monica Seles in Mahwah, and she said she would withdraw from next week's WTA event in Stanford and return at San Diego the following week. However, the draw for Stanford has been done, and she is on it as the seventh seed - she will play unranked Anne Miller of the United States in the first round. She has points to defend, having defeated Conchita Martinez on her way to the second round last year. I will keep you up-to-date when I can on whether she is or is not playing Stanford!!!

21st July 2000 (Mahwah)

For the first time in six appearances at the A&P Tennis Classic in Mahwah, New Jersey, Jennifer Capriati has failed to advance to the final. This year she was the defending champion, but fell in the quarterfinals 4-6 4-6 to top seed Monica Seles of the United States (WTA #5). According to various fans who were there she played extremely well.

15th July 2000 (Mahwah)

Jennifer Capriati has her work cut out if she wants to defend her A&P Tennis Classic title in Mahwah. She will open her campaign next Friday against fellow American Monica Seles (WTA #6). Then again, she did face Steffi Graf in her first match last year, and with a little help she got through that! Jelena Dokic has withdrawn from the event, so Jennifer may not compete in the doubles event, although she did partner Monica Seles in doubles earlier in the year.

14th July 2000 (Hong Kong)

Organisers of the Watson's Water Cup, an exhibition event held in Hong Kong in the first week of January, have invited defending champion Jennifer Capriati to participate again in 2001. As I'm sure we all remember, Jennifer defeated Chanda Rubin, Mary Pierce and Martina Hingis to win the title this year. Jennifer has until September to accept or decline the invitation.

5th July 2000 (Wimbledon)

Jennifer Capriati and Jelena Dokic lost 3-6 3-6 to Julie Halard-Decugis and Ai Sugiyama in the third round of doubles at Wimbledon. Games went with serve until 3-3 in the first set. Jennifer and Jelena then lost their next three service games, leaving them a set and a break down. That one break in the second set was enough to lose them the match. Still, the duo have now reached the last-16 at all three Grand Slams this year. They will next be together at the A&P Tennis Classic in Mahwah in two weeks, and on the WTA Tour at Montreal in August, so hopefully they will team up again at those two events. I think Jennifer can look back on Wimbledon 2000 as a job well done. Here's to a great hardcourt season, beginning with Mahwah in two weeks time.

4th July 2000 (Wimbledon)

Jennifer Capriati and Jelena Dokic lead Julie Halard-Decugis and Ai Sugiyama 2-1 after rain suspended play. The match will be first on Court 18 tomorrow. An interesting statistic for you: Jennifer is the fastest server at Wimbledon this year in the women's game after Venus and Serena Williams! I hope you are all checking out the Jennifer pictures from Wimbledon at the link above, there is quite a collection there now!

3rd July 2000 (Wimbledon)

Jennifer Capriati's Wimbledon run finally came to an end with a 3-6 3-6 defeat at the hands of defending champion and 2nd-seed Lindsay Davenport. Capriati played a fantastic match. She served well and the two produced some fantastic baseline rallies, but Davenport has finally regained the form that made her so dominant at the start of the year, and at just the wrong time for us Capriati fans. Jennifer dropped her opening service game, and though she held three break points at 2-3 down, she was unable to get the break back and surrendered the first set. A twenty minute rain delay before the start of the second set did not help Jennifer come to terms with Davenport's inspired play. Within no time at all she found herself down 0-5, and the match was lost. Sensing defeat, she began to play with more freedom and rolled off three games in a row. However, as at the Australian Open in January, the fightback came too late, and Davenport duly marched on into the quarterfinals. Jennifer can look back though on a great grasscourt season, and hopefully her results this year will encourage her to commit fully to the grasscourt season next year as well. Jennifer is still playing the doubles with Jelena Dokic, and the pair take on Julie Halard-Decugis and Ai Sugiyama tomorrow.

1st July 2000 (Wimbledon)

Jennifer Capriati recovered from a 2-5 first set deficit and the interruption of a brass band from the presentation to former Wimbledon champions on Centre Court, to advance to the fourth round with a 7-6 (7-4) 6-0 win over Yayuk Basuki. In the last-16 Jennifer will face 2nd-seed and defending champion Lindsay Davenport of the United States (WTA #2). In mixed doubles, Jennifer and Xavier Malisse lost 3-6 6-3 3-6 to Joshua Eagle (ATP Doubles #41) and Anke Huber (WTA Doubles #34).

30th June 2000 (Wimbledon)

Jennifer Capriati and Jelena Dokic continued their fine run at the Grand Slams this year, reaching the third round with a fantastic 6-3 6-4 win over 10th-seeds Conchita Martinez and Patricia Tarabini. They will meet 4th-seeds Julie Halard-Decugis of France (WTA Doubles #8) and Ai Sugiyama of Japan (WTA Doubles #9) for a place in the quarterfinals.

29th June 2000 (Wimbledon)

Jennifer Capriati defeated Meghann Shaughnessy 7-6 (7-1) 6-2 to move into the third round at Wimbledon for the first time since 1993. Jennifer had an early break for 3-1 in the first set, but Shaughnessy broke straight back to level at 3-3. The match was tense until the tiebreak, where Jennifer dropped just one point. After that it was plain sailing, as Jennifer built a 4-0 second set lead, and held serve to win it four games later. In the third round she will face Yayuk Basuki of Indonesia (WTA #NR). Basuki was a quarterfinalist at Wimbledon in 1997 and reached the fourth round for four consecutive years between 1992 and 1995. She is returning part-time to the tour after giving birth last September, and this is her first WTA main draw event since the 1999 Australian Open. Despite this, her Wimbledon record speaks for itself and she should not be underestimated. Jennifer and current beau Xavier Malisse were lucky to edge out a win in the mixed doubles first round. They were trailing Sabine Appelmans and Peter Nyborg 3-6 1-4 when an injury appears to have been caused, or an old injury began to bother, one of their opponents. Whoever was injured decided to carry on as a win was in sight, but Jennifer and Xavier fought back to force a second set tiebreak which they squeezed through 8-6. That was enough for their injured opponent, who called it a day, handing them a 3-6 7-6 (8-6) ret'd victory. In the second round they will face either 11th-seeds Cara and Wayne Black or Anke Huber and Joshua Eagle. Jennifer and Jelena Dokic face Conchita Martinez and Patricia Tarabini first thing tomorrow morning, and Jennifer and Yayuk Basuki will play on Saturday.

28th June 2000 (Wimbledon)

Jennifer Capriati and Jelena Dokic continued their Grand Slam doubles successes this year with a straightforward 6-2 6-4 win over Magdalena Grzybowska and Yuka Yoshida in the Wimbledon women's doubles first round. Expect them to be more troubled though in the second round by 10th-seeds Conchita Martinez of Spain (WTA Doubles #17) and Patricia Tarabini of Argentina (WTA Doubles #23). Interestingly, Jennifer has also entered the mixed doubles as a wildcard entry with boyfriend Xavier Malisse of Belgium (ATP Doubles #537). They face Sabine Appelmans of Belgium (WTA Doubles #69) and Peter Nyborg of Sweden (ATP Doubles #54) in the first round tomorrow. Jennifer will also play her second round singles match against Meghann Shaughnessy tomorrow. It is the first match on Court 18. News too on Jennifer's former coach Harold Solomon. He is now working with Mirjana Lucic.

27th June 2000 (Wimbledon)

Jennifer Capriati played a fantastic game to send 16th-seed Dominique Van Roost of Belgium (WTA #15) crashing out 6-2 6-4 in the first round at Wimbledon. Both players needed the trainer for mild injuries to their legs, but Jennifer kept her cool throughout the match. She looked fit, confident and motivated, and will face Meghann Shaughnessy of the United States (WTA #55) in the second round. Good news too for Jennifer's chances at Olympic selection. Had she lost to Van Roost, then Chanda Rubin would have moved ahead of her in next week's rankings and killed off any chance she had of playing in Sydney. But with Jennifer's victory and Rubin's first round Wimbledon loss, Jennifer will now stand as the next player for selection if the Williams sisters decide not to travel to Sydney. In Wimbledon doubles, Jennifer and Jelena Dokic play their first match tomorrow. Also, Jennifer has ended speculation about who her new coach is going to be. She will be coached by her father Stefano.

26th June 2000 (Sanex WTA Rankings)

Though unseeded for Wimbledon, and facing the 16th-seed in the first round, Jennifer Capriati moves up to #16 in the latest Sanex WTA Singles Rankings.

24th June 2000 (Wimbledon)

Jennifer Capriati and 16th-seed Dominique Van Roost will play their first round Wimbledon match on Tuesday, presumably on Centre Court. Van Roost lost in straight sets to Julie Halard-Decugis in the final at Eastbourne today.

23rd June 2000 ('s-Hertogenbosch)

Jennifer Capriati started brightly against World #1 Martina Hingis, opening up a 4-1 lead in their semi-final at 's-Hertogenbosch. However, after that Hingis got her act together and won twelve of the next fifteen games to win the match 7-5 6-2. Still, Jennifer could probably do with a rest before next week's Wimbledon event, where she faces 16th-seed Dominique Van Roost in the first round. Ironically, Jennifer will head into Wimbledon next week with a ranking of #16! Van Roost is short of rest and relaxation heading into the year's third Grand Slam event. She played eight sets spread over one singles match and two doubles matches today at Eastbourne, and will contest the final against Julie Halard-Decugis tomorrow.

22nd June 2000 ('s-Hertogenbosch/Future Events)

Jennifer Capriati has defeated Patty Schnyder of Switzerland (WTA #34) 7-5 7-5 in the quarterfinals at 's-Hertogenbosch to advance to an intruiging semi-final clash with World #1 Martina Hingis of Switzerland. Hingis has not had quite the grasscourt preparation she had hoped for here. She had a first round bye, defeated Jana Nejedly 6-2 6-0 in the second round, and received a quarterfinal walkover when Cara Black withdrew with a virus. Jennifer defeated Martina Hingis in the final of the Hong Kong Exhibition in January, and will be hoping to repeat that result. Jelena Dokic, possibly finding it hard to pick herself up after her 0-6 1-6 loss to Kristina Brandi today, and Jennifer lost their quarterfinal doubles match 6-7 (8-10) 3-6 to Sabine Appelmans and Rita Grande. I wonder if Jennifer is keeping up-to-date with the Eastbourne progress of Dominique Van Roost. Van Roost, who will play Jennifer in the first round at Wimbledon next week, defeated Lindsay Davenport today to advance to the semi-finals of the British pre-Wimbledon warm-up event. Jennifer is already planning her hardcourt season. After playing the Mahwah exhibition in July, she will play the following two weeks on the WTA Tour at Stanford and San Diego.

21st June 2000 ('s-Hertogenbosch)

Jennifer Capriati moved into her fourth WTA quarterfinal of the year at 's-Hertogenbosch with a 6-1 5-7 6-1 win over Erika De Lone in the second round. The match was suspended due to rain with De Lone leading 6-5 in the second set, and when play resumed De Lone clinched the first game to win the set. After that though, Jennifer was back on track. It is the first time since 1993 that Jennifer has played four WTA quarterfinals in one year. In the last-8 she will face the winner of the match between 7th-seed Kim Clijsters of Belgium (WTA #30) and Patty Schynder of Switzerland (WTA #34), which was suspended due to darkness at 5-5 final set. Jennifer has a 1:0 career win:loss record over both of them. Jennifer and Jelena Dokic's hopes for the doubles title have been hit by the rain today. Jelena was unable to even begin her second round match with defending champion Kristina Brandi, and will have to play that match tomorrow, as well as her quarterfinal match if she progresses, and then her doubles quarterfinal with Jennifer at the end of the day. The poor girl will be shattered! Wins for Anna Kournikova and Dominique Van Roost at Eastbourne today mean that Jennifer's ranking is unlikely to change much next week.

20th June 2000 (Wimbledon/'s-Hertogenbosch)

Jennifer Capriati has been given a tough opening round match at Wimbledon. She will face 16th-seed Dominique Van Roost of Belgium (WTA #16). They have played only once before, with Jennifer winning 8-6 in the final set at the Australian Open earlier this year. It is funny to think that had Jennifer won her Birmingham quarterfinal she would have been seeded 16th, and Van Roost would have been unseeded, so we may still have had the same first round draw! Needless to say it is a tough match, but should Jennifer win she will get the bonus points, and a clear path through to Lindsay Davenport, who may find it hard going with her back injury, in the fourth round. Back in 's-Hertogenbosch, Jennifer and Jelena Dokic made a good start to their doubles campaign, defeating Henrieta Nagyova and Patty Schnyder 7-5 6-0. They now face 4th-seeds Sabine Appelmans of Belgium (WTA #78: Doubles) and Rita Grande of Italy (WTA #60: Doubles) in the quarterfinals. This is all good preparation for next week's Wimbledon event, where they face Magdalena Grzybowska of Poland (WTA #102: Doubles) and Yuka Yoshida of Japan (WTA #71: Doubles) in the first round, with a possible meeting with 10th-seeds Conchita Martinez and Patricia Tarabini in the second round. In the 's-Hertogenbosch singles event Jennifer will face Erika De Lone of the United States (WTA #69) in the second round.

19th June 2000 ('s-Hertogenbosch/Wimbledon)

Jennifer Capriati got her 's-Hertogenbosch campaign off to a fine start with a straightforward 6-3 6-1 win over Magdalena Maleeva of Bulgaria (WTA #61). In the second round she will face either Erika De Lone or Meghann Shaugnessy, both of the United States. Jennifer is also playing doubles again with Jelena Dokic of Australia (WTA #55: Doubles) and they face Henrieta Nagyova of Slovakia (WTA #128: Doubles) and Patty Schnyder of Switzerland (WTA #50: Doubles) in the first round. The Wimbledon seedings have been announced, and though the men's rankings have been rearranged to produce the seedings, the seeding committee has stuck rigidly to the Sanex WTA Rankings for the women's seedings, which leaves Jennifer needing two withdrawals above her to get a seeding position. She is currently ranked #18 in the latest Sanex WTA Singles Rankings.

18th June 2000 ('s-Hertogenbosch/Wimbledon)

Jennifer Capriati is the 4th-seed at 's-Hertogenbosch and begins her campaign with a tough match against Magdalena Maleeva of Bulgaria (WTA #53). Though Maleeva is hardly at her best anymore, and indeed she has lost in the first round in eight of her thirteen tournaments so far this year, she is always a dangerous floater in any draw. The Wimbledon seedings are announced tomorrow, and since no Top 16 players have withdrawn it is highly unlikely that Jennifer Capriati will be seeded.

16th June 2000 (Mahwah)

Jennifer Capriati will defend her title at the A&P Tennis Classic in Mahwah, New Jersey, which begins on July 16th. Capriati defeated Chanda Rubin in the final last year, and in five appearances at the event has never lost before the final, winning on three occasions. Anna Kournikova, Amanda Coetzer, Jelena Dokic and Lina Krasnoroutskaya have also entered the event.

16th June 2000 (Birmingham)

Jennifer Capriati came frustratingly close to a semi-final position at Birmingham, and more importantly to a seeding position at Wimbledon, when she served for the match at 2-6 6-4 5-4 against Lisa Raymond. However, in a third set with an incredible nine breaks of serve, that lead was never going to be decisive, and Jennifer lost the next three games and the match, 2-6 6-4 5-7. Had she won her ranking would have advanced to at least #16 next week, putting her in a firm position for a Wimbledon seeding, but as it is she will have to make do with a #18 ranking, and only an outside chance of being seeded at the year's third Grand Slam. Amelie Mauresmo has withdrawn from Eastbourne next week with a back injury, and Arantxa Sanchez Vicario withdrew needing rest after the French Open, but both are expected at Wimbledon. Julie Halard-Decugis, who said at the French Open that she may miss Wimbledon because she is exhausted, has obviously got over her exhaustion, announcing her late entry to Eastbourne today. Although Jennifer has scuppered her seeding chances at Wimbledon with her loss to Raymond, she can take comfort in the fact that she will be only a handful of points behind #15 Halard-Decugis next week. Jennifer's next event is 's-Hertogenbosch (also known as Rosmalen) next week. In her post-match interview after losing to Raymond she said, "The main thing now is to recover from this, look after myself next week at Rosmalen and not overdo it because Wimbledon is obviously the main thing."

15th June 2000 (Birmingham)

Jennifer Capriati advanced to the quarterfinals at Birmingham when Magui Serna injured her foot and was forced to retire. It had been a very tight contest up until then, Capriati winning with the score at 2-6 6-2 4-3. Jennifer will play 5th-seed Lisa Raymond of the United States (WTA #28) in the last-8. Someone has posted on the WTA WebBoard that Jennifer has taken a wildcard for Eastbourne next week, but I cannot find anything else to verify that. However, there are several articles about Martina Hingis accepting a late entry into 's-Hertogenbosch, and all those articles say that Jennifer is playing there also. So, whatever happens, it does look like Jennifer is playing next week!!!

14th June 2000 (Birmingham)

Despite rain washing out most of today's play at Birmingham, Jennifer Capriati will still play her third round match against 12th-seed Magui Serna of Spain (WTA #46) tomorrow. Serna has needed three sets to get by both Julie Pullin and Maria Alejandra Vento in her opening two matches.

13th June 2000 (Birmingham)

Jennifer Capriati has snapped a four match losing streak stretching back to 27th March by defeating British wildcard Lorna Woodroffe 6-1 7-5 in the second round at Birmingham. In the last-16, Jennifer will play the winner of the match between 12th-seed Magui Serna of Spain and Maria Alejandra Vento of Venezuela, who play tomorrow.

12th June 2000 (Birmingham)

Jennifer Capriati will face wildcard entry Lorna Woodroffe of Great Britain (WTA #327) in the second round at Birmingham, after a first round bye. Woodroffe is nursing a muscle strain she suffered in the first set of her three set victory over qualifier Rachel McQuillan in the first round. Woodroffe reached the second round at the ITF/Surbiton Challenger last week, losing to eventual runner-up Tamarine Tanasugarn, and is best remembered in her home country for defeating Patty Schnyder in the first round at Wimbledon in 1997.

11th June 2000 (Birmingham/Wimbledon/Sanex WTA Rankings)

Jennifer Capriati is the 3rd-seed at Birmingham and receives a first round bye. In the second round she will face either wildcard entry Lorna Woodroffe of Great Britain or qualifier Rachel McQuillan of Australia. Jennifer should not underestimate the British challenge, last week British #1 Louise Latimer (WTA #127) defeated both Alexandra Stevenson and Tamarine Tanasugarn to win the ITF Surbiton Challenger. Nevertheless, Jennifer should be happy with a reasonable draw and a chance to get some much-needed match practice before Wimbledon. I would have liked to see her in the doubles draw as well though, but perhaps she could not get a partner due to her late entry to the event. This week, Jennifer has slipped to #19 in the latest Sanex WTA Singles Rankings and will need a good showing to improve her ranking with the Wimbledon seedings calculated next week. Although Wimbledon often ignores the rankings, I don't think that Jennifer will be given a seeding unless she is in a seeding position, since she hasn't gone beyond the second round at Wimbledon since 1993, and the players likely to be just above her are all good grasscourt players with good Wimbledon showings in recent years (Halard-Decugis, Van Roost, Kournikova). We shall have to wait and see! Worth noting is Jennifer's first appearance in the doubles Top 100 for many years. In the latest Sanex WTA Doubles Rankings she has climbed twenty-one places to #96 after reaching the third round at the French Open with Jelena Dokic.

9th June 2000 (Birmingham)

Jennifer Capriati's commitment to the grasscourt season continues. She has accepted a late entry into the DFS Classic in Birmingham which begins on Monday, though whether this means she will still fly out of the UK for 's-Hertogenbosch and back in for Wimbledon remains to be seen.

5th June 2000 (French Open)

Jennifer Capriati and Jelena Dokic lost their third round doubles match 3-6 2-6 to 3rd-seeds Martina Hingis and Mary Pierce. Both can now begin their grasscourt preparation, ready for 's-Hertogenbosch, week beginning June 19th, where both begin their grasscourt season. Hopefully their French Open success together will encourage them to play doubles together at 's-Hertogenbosch and Wimbledon and perhaps beyond! Meanwhile, Xavier Malisse is currently playing a challenger event in Germany.

4th June 2000 (French Open)

Jennifer Capriati and Jelena Dokic defeated Silvia Farina and Karina Habsudova 6-3 4-6 6-2 to move into the French Open women's doubles third round, where they will face 3rd-seeds Martina Hingis of Switzerland (WTA #6: Doubles) and Mary Pierce of France (WTA #5: Doubles) for a place in the quarterfinals. Congratulations Jennifer and Jelena!!!

3rd June 2000 (Sanex WTA Rankings)

Ai Sugiyama's continuing success at the French Open means that she joins Dominique Van Roost and Barbara Schett in pushing Jennifer Capriati down the Sanex WTA Rankings. Jennifer will now slip down to 19th following the French Open, and stands virtually no chance of being seeded for Wimbledon this year.

2nd June 2000 (French Open)

Jennifer Capriati and Jelena Dokic will have to postpone their grass court preparation a little longer. The duo defeated the experience of Larisa Neiland and the inexperience of Lina Krasnoroutskaya 6-2 6-7 (2-7) 6-4 in the first round of the women's doubles event at the French Open. Having raced through the first set so comfortably, the American/Australian teaming fell behind 0-3 in the second set, but recovered well to force the tiebreak. With Krasnoroutskaya/Neiland levelling the match by taking the tiebreak 7-2, it was on to a third set littered with breaks. Capriati/Dokic broke for a 4-3 lead, but Jelena Dokic lost her next service game, and it was all even at 4-4 again. However, after yet another break in the following game, it was left to Jennifer to serve out the match and, after recovering from 15-30 on serve, she did just that. So congratulations to Jennifer and Jelena for a fine win, especially considering that Larisa Neiland is currently ranked #9 in the Sanex WTA doubles rankings. But it's not over yet: in the second round Jennifer and Jelena face Silvia Farina of Italy (WTA #38: Doubles) and Karina Habsudova of Slovakia (WTA #50: Doubles). If they dare to look a round ahead, there is the possibility of an intruiguing encounter with Martina Hingis and Mary Pierce in the third round to look forward to. The mixed doubles draw has finally been released, and sadly Jennifer Capriati and Xavier Malisse have not decided to team up for a crowd pleasing duo, and both have opted to miss the mixed event. In fact, Jennifer Capriati has only played mixed doubles twice in her career, reaching the quarterfinals at Wimbledon in 1992 with Luke Jensen and the second round at the 1997 Australian Open with Pat Cash.

1st June 2000 ('s-Hertogenbosch)

For the first time since the early 1990s Jennifer Capriati will play a grasscourt warm-up event in preparation for Wimbledon. She will play 's-Hertogenbosch event in the Netherlands, which begins on June 19th, the week before Wimbledon.

29th May 2000 (French Open)

Jennifer Capriati can put her singles loss at the French Open behind her, and concentrate on another Grand Slam doubles run with Jelena Dokic of Australia (WTA #65: Doubles). Capriati and Dokic, who reached the third round together at the Australian Open, have teamed up again at the French Open. They face the interesting combination of Lina Krasnoroutskaya of Russia (WTA #178: Doubles) and Larisa Neiland of Latvia (WTA #9: Doubles) in the first round.

29th May 2000 (French Open)

Jennifer Capriati crashed out of the French Open 3-6 5-7 in the first round to Fabiola Zuluaga of Colombia (WTA #34). It was an even match until Jennifer wasted four break points when Zuluaga served at 3-3 in the first set. After that Jennifer crumbled, losing the next five games to trail 3-6 0-2, and in amongst those games managed to win only one point in four consecutive games. Although Zuluaga appeared to be coasting, Jennifer pulled herself together and won three games in a row to lead 3-2 in the second set. In the next game, she needed nine break points for a 4-2 lead, but Zuluaga broke back immediately. At 5-4, Jennifer missed two set points, and Zuluaga took her chance, winning that game and the next two to take the match 6-3 7-5.

27th May 2000 (Strasbourg/French Open)

Rita Kuti-Kis of Hungary, who defeated Jennifer Capriati in the second round at Strasbourg, failed to win the title today, losing to Croatia's Silvija Talaja. Jennifer's first round French Open opponent, Fabiola Zuluaga, also finished in runner-up position in Madrid today, falling to Spaniard Gala Leon Garcia in three sets.

26th May 2000 (French Open)

Jennifer Capriati has been made 15th-seed for the French Open, following the withdrawal of Serena Williams. In the first round she faces Fabiola Zuluaga of Colombia (WTA #41), who has come into her own in recent weeks after a poor start to the claycourt season. Last week she reached the semi-finals at Rome as a qualifier, defeating Silvija Talaja, Julie Halard-Decugis and Nathalie Tauziat along the way, and tomorrow she will play in the final at Madrid. Jennifer is seeded to meet Nathalie Tauziat in the fourth round, and current World #1 Martina Hingis in the quarter finals, but given her recent form, Zuluaga may prove an obstacle not easy to overcome. However, Jennifer is already practising at Roland Garros (see French Open pictures, link above) and looks in reasonable shape.

24th May 2000 (Strasbourg)

Jennifer Capriati ignored what may be the best draw she will see this year, falling 1-6 6-7 (3-7) to Rita Kuti-Kis of Hungary (WTA #72) in the second round at Strasbourg. Her ranking is unlikely to be affected as her nearest rivals (Van Roost, Likhovtseva, Frazier, Sugiyama) have all lost early this week as well at the Strasbourg and Madrid tournaments. However, Jennifer cannot be too thrilled going into the French Open so short of clay court practice, and still without a clay court win this year. Although Harold Solomon has said he will not badmouth Jennifer following their split, more and more details seem to be emerging over the weeks. It seems that Jennifer fired Harold Solomon as her coach after he told her that she needed to concentrate more on her tennis than on her relationship with Xavier Malisse. Personally I would have thought that having a professional tennis player for a boyfriend would make training easier! Whatever the truth of the matter, Jennifer will need to train hard for the year's second Grand Slam, if she hopes to defend her points from last year's fourth round showing, and thus hope to be seeded at Wimbledon in June. Xavier Malisse may prove to be a distraction, having lost today in the second round of French Open qualifying.

23rd May 2000 (Strasbourg)

Jennifer Capriati will begin the defence of her Strasbourg title against Rita Kuti-Kis of Hungary (WTA #72) in the second round. Jennifer had a first round bye, while Kuti-Kis easily dispatched qualifier Sophie Erre of France 6-2 6-2 in the first round. Capriati and Kuti-Kis have never played each other before. Jennifer's boyfriend, Xavier Malisse, is not with her in Strasbourg. He is currently in Paris, taking part in the qualifying for the French Open.

22nd May 2000 (French Open)

The seedings for next week's French Open have been announced, and for the first time since the 1993 US Open, Jennifer Capriati finds herself seeded at a Grand Slam event, albeit at the bottom rung of the ladder - sixteenth seed. Last year, Jennifer reached the fourth round, and she will need to put in a good show at the French Open, and at Strasbourg this week, if she hopes to be seeded at Wimbledon in June.

21st May 2000 (Strasbourg)

With Anke Huber (tendinitis) and Amanda Coetzer (exhausted after winning Antwerp, perhaps!) opting not to play, Jennifer Capriati is seeded second for Strasbourg, where, of course, she is defending champion. She thus gets a first round bye, and will play either Rita Kuti-Kis of Hungary or a qualifier in the last-16.

20th May 2000 (French Open/Strasbourg)

British tennis magazine, Ace, reports the rumour that Jennifer Capriati and Xavier Malisse may play mixed doubles at the year's three remaining Grand Slams. Certainly would be a crowd pleaser. The draw is up at the Strasbourg website but is missing the bottom section that Jennifer is (hopefully) in. More news when I get it.

15th May 2000 (Italian Open)

Jennifer Capriati crashed out 3-6 5-7 in the first round of the Italian Open in Rome to Anne-Gaelle Sidot of France (WTA #31). Jennifer will drop to #15 next week, and may fall further if Amelie Mauresmo and Elena Likhovtseva perform well at Rome. The seedings for the French Open will be done from next week's rankings. At last the rumours about Harold Solomon can be cleared up. Jennifer and Solomon have parted ways, but amicably. Jennifer feels that she needs a full-time coach, which Solomon was not prepared to commit to because of family commitments. She is currently looking for a coach. Also, the reason why she has not been playing is because of her injury, and consequently has only been practising for the last week or so. I think that lays to rest a lot of the fears we all had, me included. Jennifer seems to be positive for the future and commited to making the best of her tennis, so we all wish her good luck next week in Strasbourg. Despite rumours to the contrary in various places, Jennifer is not playing doubles at the Italian Open.

14th May 2000 (Italian Open)

Jennifer Capriati returns after several weeks away at the Italian Open in Rome, where she is seeded 10th. She has a tough first round opponent in Anne-Gaelle Sidot of France (WTA #30). In the second round she could face either Silvia Farina or Lisa Raymond, with 5th-seed Monica Seles as a likely third round encounter. Not easy then for Jennifer, playing her first claycourt event of the year. Because of last year's ranking points coming off a week early, Jennifer is also, in effect, defending her points here from winning Strasbourg last year, and the seedings for the French Open will be done based upon the May 22 rankings which follow this tournament. On a lighter note, UK fans can see Jennifer Capriati on BBC1's 'On Side' at 11:05pm on Wednesday, May 17th.

5th May 2000 (Berlin)

Jennifer Capriati is definitely not playing in Berlin next week. Her name has been removed from the tournament website. She is scheduled to return at the Italian Open in Rome, which begins on May 15th.

3rd May 2000 (Xavier Malisse/Montreal)

Jennifer Capriati is currently in Orlando, supporting her boyfriend Xavier Malisse of Belgium who has successfully qualified there and is currently through to the second round. Pictures of them together there can be found in my Miscellaneous Pictures section, and also at Melissa's Xavier Malisse Website. There are also some articles about Xavier's progress that mention Jennifer in the General Posts section at the Jennifer Capriati WebBoard. Looks like it's the real thing! I hope they are very happy together! Also, Jennifer Capriati has entered the Du Maurier Open in Montreal, week beginning August 14th.

2nd May 2000 (Berlin)

Oh! I don't know what's going on! The WTA say that Jennifer Capriati has no intention of playing at Berlin next week, and they don't know why the tournament are holding a wildcard for her. I give up! I'm not going to post anything more about Berlin. We can just all wait and see whether she is there next week!?!

1st May 2000 (Harold Solomon)

In this week's Hot List at CNN-SI by Jon Wertheim, Jennifer Capriati is listed in the negative category due to the rumour of her having parted company with her coach, Harold Solomon. The pair have been working together for 13 months and Solomon is credited with the recent upturn in Jennifer's fortunes. I don't know for sure if this rumour is true or not, but I will keep you posted with any further developments.

1st May 2000 (Berlin)

The organisers at the Berlin Open have confirmed that Jennifer Capriati is playing there next week. She has been awarded a wildcard as a late entry. Good decision for Jennifer to make, and I am so glad because it has been so dull while she hasn't been playing!!!

22nd April 2000 (Berlin)

Although Jennifer Capriati is not on the WTA commitments lists for Berlin, week beginning 8th May, she is listed as a participant on their website.

18th April 2000 (Strasbourg)

Lindsay Davenport's foot injury may affect Jennifer Capriati's defence of her Strasbourg title. Davenport is expected to be out for the next four weeks, and says she may enter Strasbourg to get some last minute practice for the French Open. Jennifer has lost to Davenport twice this year.

17th April 2000 (Sanex WTA Rankings)

For the first time this year, Jennifer Capriati slips down the Sanex WTA singles rankings, falling one place to #13.

15th April 2000 (Hilton Head)

Jennifer Capriati has withdrawn from next week's Hilton Head event with tendinitis of the right Achilles' tendon. The injury first bothered her at Miami a few weeks ago. Her next scheduled event is the Italian Open in Rome, which begins on May 16th.

14th April 2000 (www.capriati.com)

I would like to welcome everyone back to www.capriati.com. The site has been experiencing various problems for the last six weeks or so, but everything seems to have righted itself now, and we are back in business. In future, if things seem to be wrong with the site, check out the Jennifer Capriati WebBoard (link above) and I will keep you posted from there. Jennifer returns to WTA action at next week's Hilton Head event.

13th April 2000 (Strasbourg)

Jennifer Capriati will defend her title at Strasbourg, week beginning 22nd May 2000. She is currently the second highest ranked player, after Nathalie Tauziat, entered for the event.

12th April 2000 (Miscellaneous)

Check out the happy couple:

Jennifer and Xavier Malisse

11th April 2000 (Berlin/Rome)

The WTA commitments lists for Berlin have been published and Jennifer is not actually on them. I apologise for my mistake, but Jennifer is on the commitments lists for the Italian Open in Rome, beginning on May 16th. So it would appear that after next week's event in Hilton Head she will be having a few weeks off again. Is this wise? I don't know, but if she's off holidaying with Xavier Malisse you can hardly blame her, can you!?! After turning down the offer of a wildcard for Amelia Island, Jennifer instead travelled to Atlanta with Malisse and has been watching him qualifying for the main draw. She was also in the stands for his first round loss to men's #1 Andre Agassi.

10th April 2000 (Sanex WTA Rankings)

As expected, Jennifer Capriati moves up one place to a new year high of #12 in the latest Sanex WTA singles rankings. She has turned down the offer of a wildcard at Amelia Island, and will start her claycourt season at Hilton Head next week.

3rd April 2000 (Sanex WTA Rankings)

Jennifer Capriati moves up one place to a new year high of #13 in the latest Sanex WTA singles rankings. So far this year, Jennifer's ranking has improved on, or stayed the same as, the week before. There are no WTA tournaments next week, but the points for last year's Amelia Island's event come off the rankings, which means Jennifer will move above Anna Kournikova to #12 on April 10th.

1st April 2000 (Berlin)

Jennifer Capriati has entered the WTA tournament in Berlin, week beginning 8th May 2000. She also is reported to have a wildcard on hold for next week's Amelia Island tournament, but is yet to decide whether or not she wants to take it.

29th March 2000 (Happy Birthday Jen!)

I would like to wish Jennifer Capriati a happy 24th birthday from www.capriati.com and I am sure all her fans join me in this wish. Hard to believe after ten years on the professional tour that she is still so young!?!

28th March 2000 (Miami)

Sandrine Testud easily defeated Jennifer Capriati 6-3 6-4 in their quarterfinal match at Miami. I am surprised they had to play today as both had tough three set matches yesterday, and it would have perhaps been fairer to play the upper-half of the draw today. Oh well, Jennifer's run through to the last-eight will see her ranking improve one slot to #13 next week. She is next scheduled to appear at Hilton Head, which begins on the 18th April.

27th March 2000 (Miami)

Jennifer Capriati shocked 5th-seed, and reigning US Open champion, Serena Williams 7-6 (7-2) 1-6 6-3 in a topsy-turvy fourth round battle at Miami. Jennifer will now face 12th-seed Sandrine Testud of France (WTA #13) in the quarter-finals. At their last meeting in January at Sydney, Jennifer defeated Testud 6-3 6-1. Congratulations to Jennifer on her win against Serena, she looked so thrilled at the end of the match. It's great to see her smiling!

26th March 2000 (Miami)

Jennifer Capriati defeated Chanda Rubin 6-1 6-3 and will now face 5th-seed Serena Williams of the United States (WTA #6) in the fourth round.

25th March 2000 (Miami)

Jennifer Capriati has defeated wildcard Aubrie Rippner of the United States 7-5 6-1 in the second round at Miami. Jennifer led 4-1 in the first set before falling behind 4-5. She then won eight games in a row to get to 7-5 5-0, and closed out the match after allowing Rippner one service game. She will now face 24th-seed Chanda Rubin of the United States (WTA #26) in the third round. Their last three meetings have been three set matches, but Jennifer has won them all. Still, it will be a tough test.

24th March 2000 (Miami)

The Miami doubles draw has been announced and sadly Jennifer and Monica have decided not to play doubles there. Neither of them have entered the doubles draw, and with Martina Hingis and Lindsay Davenport also opting out of the doubles draw perhaps the strain of playing two huge events like Indian Wells and Miami one after the other is showing. Jennifer's second round match is to be played tomorrow against Brie Rippner, and congratulations to Xavier Malisse who, having qualified for the main draw, defeated Magnus Larsson today to advance to a second round meeting with Nicholas Lapentti tomorrow. I wonder if Jennifer will watch that match before she prepares for her match. Jennifer and Xavier have been dating now for three weeks. Good luck to them both, I hope they are having fun!

23rd March 2000 (Miami/Sanex WTA Awards)

Jennifer Capriati will play wildcard Aubrie 'Brie' Rippner of the United States (WTA #142) in the second round at Miami. Rippner needed three sets to defeat qualifier Els Callens of Belgium. At the Sanex WTA Awards, Jennifer lost out on Most Improved Player of the Year Award, which went to Serena Williams, but did win the EuroSport Spirit of Co-Operation Award. And, no, I don't know what it means either!?!

21st March 2000 (Miami)

Jennifer Capriati is unlucky thirteenth seed and has a first round bye at Miami. In the second round she will face either wildcard Aubrie 'Brie' Rippner of the United States, or a qualifier. She is seeded to meet Chanda Rubin in the third round, and Serena Williams in the last-16.

19th March 2000 (Miscellaneous)

At the WTA Message Boards there is a funny little Oscar-type thing going on, and I have been nominated for Favourite Poster and Most Obsessive Fan!?! You can vote for me here! Please do, I WANT AN AWARD!?! :)

15th March 2000 (Indian Wells)

Chanda Rubin and Sandrine Testud gained revenge for their 2-6 1-6 loss to Jennifer Capriati and Monica Seles last week in Scottsdale. The 7th-seeds beat the wildcard pairing 5-7 6-4 6-2 in their quarterfinal match at Indian Wells. Hopefully Jennifer and Monica will continue their doubles partnership next week in Miami.

14th March 2000 (Indian Wells)

The wildcard pairing of Jennifer Capriati and Monica Seles, fresh from their first round win over top seeds Lisa Raymond and Rennae Stubbs, have progressed to the Indian Wells doubles quarterfinals with a straightforward 6-2 6-4 win over Catherine Barclay of Australia and Anne-Gaelle Sidot of France. In the last-eight they will meet 7th-seeds Chanda Rubin of the United States (WTA #24: Doubles) and Sandrine Testud of France (WTA #14: Doubles), whom they beat 6-2 6-1 in the first round at Scottsdale last week. Thanks to Michael Danner for getting the doubles result today from the Indian Wells office after the official live scoreboard froze up completely. Thanks Mike!

13th March 2000 (Indian Wells)

Wildcard pairing Jennifer Capriati and Monica Seles stunned top seeds Lisa Raymond and Rennae Stubbs in the first round at Indian Wells. After taking the first set 6-2, Capriati and Seles fell behind 1-5 in the second set. They fought back, winning five consecutive games, and served for the match at 6-2 6-5. However, Raymond and Stubbs fought back themselves, forcing a tiebreak, which they won comprehensively 7-1. Capriati and Seles did not give up though. They broke for a 3-1 lead in the final set and never looked back. After wasting two match points on their opponent's serve at 5-2, they served it out to love in the next game. Lisa Raymond had a realistic shot of becoming World Doubles #1 this week, but it looks like that is unlikely now. Capriati and Seles take on Catherine Barclay of Australia (WTA #80: Doubles) and Anne-Gaelle Sidot of France (WTA #32: Doubles) in the second round.

11th March 2000 (Indian Wells)

Jennifer blew a one set lead in her second round match with Cara Black of Zimbabwe (WTA #51) at Indian Wells, folding 7-5 1-6 2-6. This is her first loss to a player ranked outside the Top 16 since July 1999 when she lost to #42 Corina Morariu at Stanford. She is still in the doubles draw with Monica Seles however, but will have her work cut out against top seeds Lisa Raymond and Rennae Stubbs.

10th March 2000 (Indian Wells)

Jennifer Capriati has again teamed up with Monica Seles of the United States (WTA #51: Doubles) in doubles and the pair are a wildcard entry. Their doubles time at Indian Wells may be shortlived though as they have been drawn against top seeds and Australian Open champions Lisa Raymond of the United States (WTA #2: Doubles) and Rennae Stubbs of Australia (WTA #3: Doubles). Raymond is chasing the World #1 doubles position this week, and Rennae Stubbs is hoping to be recovered from the shoulder injury which caused the pair to withdraw from their first round Scottsdale match last week.

9th March 2000 (Indian Wells)

Jennifer Capriati is seeded 12th at Indian Wells, and in the bizarrely huge draw will face Cara Black of Zimbabwe (WTA #51) in the second round, after both received first round byes! Jennifer is seeded to meet Monica Seles in the fourth round, and Martina Hingis in the quarter-finals, so I suppose the draw could have been a little kinder, but both are beatable. Let's hope Jennifer is playing doubles with Monica Seles again as well. Jennifer has played Cara Black once before, in Strasbourg last year, and beat the former ITF Junior #1 in straight sets.

6th March 2000 (Anniversary)

Thanks to pgl on the Jennifer Capriati WebBoard (link above) for reminding me - it is ten years today since Jennifer played her first WTA match at Boca Raton, back in 1990. She reached the final there, losing to Gabriela Sabatini. Since then she has clocked up eight WTA singles titles, one WTA doubles title, quite a bit of controversy, truck-loads of success and a 225-100 career win-loss record! Here's to the next ten years Jennifer!?!

3rd March 2000 (Scottsdale)

Jennifer Capriati and Monica Seles lost 0-6 5-7 in the quarterfinals at Scottsdale to Martina Hingis and Mary Pierce. Seles had earlier lost her quarterfinal singles match against Lindsay Davenport. Let's hope Jen and Monica play together again at Indian Wells next week. Also, Jennifer has entered Hilton Head, week beginning 18th April 2000.

2nd March 2000 (Indian Wells)

Jennifer Capriati has changed her mind about not playing Indian Wells next week and has entered as a replacement for some of the big names that have pulled out, such as Arantxa Sanchez Vicario and Mary Joe Fernandez. Excellent news, and the right thing to do methinks! Thanks to Michael Danner for finding out this info.

2nd March 2000 (Scottsdale)

Jennifer Capriati put up a great fight and took a set off the World #2 before Lindsay Davenport defeated her 3-6 6-2 6-3 in the second round at Scottsdale. Incidentally, this was Jennifer's 100th WTA loss! Hopefully Jennifer's improved ranking and game will see her having a better chance of getting past this dreaded second round stage in future! Her next scheduled event is Miami in three weeks time (20th March). Jennifer and Monica Seles are still in the doubles event and play Martina Hingis and Mary Pierce in the quarter-finals.

1st March 2000 (Scottsdale)

Wow! Jennifer Capriati and Monica Seles are playing doubles for the first time since 1991, whereas Chanda Rubin and Sandrine Testud are a regular partnership, but Jennifer and Monica steamrollered over them 6-2 6-1 and will meet 3rd-seeded pairing Martina Hingis of Switzerland (WTA #1: Doubles) and Mary Pierce of France (WTA #8: Doubles). If Jennifer could stun Lindsay Davenport in singles and Hingis and Pierce in doubles then that would be quite something!

29th February 2000 (Scottsdale)

The four weeks off has obviously done the girl good!!! Jennifer Capriati breezed into a second round Scottsdale showdown with 2nd-seed Lindsay Davenport by crushing Alexandra Stevenson 6-3 6-0. "I think I was pretty solid for her, and I didn't destruct on my game at all", said Capriati after the match. Now let's get some Aussie Open revenge in round two!

27th February 2000 (Scottsdale)

Jennifer Capriati has re-teamed with Monica Seles of the United States (WTA #56: Doubles) for the doubles at Scottsdale. The pair last played together in 1991 at the Italian Open in Rome, giving Jennifer her only WTA doubles title to date. Capriati and Seles take on Chanda Rubin of the United States (WTA #24: Doubles) and Sandrine Testud of France (WTA #14: Doubles) in the first round, and could meet Martina Hingis and Mary Pierce in the next round.

27th February 2000 (Scottsdale)

After the four week break Jennifer will have to be raring to go because she has a tough Scottsdale draw. In the first round she faces Wimbledon prodigy Alexandra Stevenson of the United States (WTA #36), who is struggling a little to repeat her grass-court success from last year. She has a 4:6 win-loss record for the year so far, but has beaten Dominique Van Roost and Barbara Schett. She is coming off a first round Oklahoma loss to Sylvia Plischke. The winner of the Capriati-Stevenson match will play 2nd-seed Lindsay Davenport of the United States (WTA #2), a chance for Jennifer to get some Aussie Open revenge perhaps? Also in Jennifer's quarter of the draw is unseeded Monica Seles, who is pounding her way through the Oklahoma draw at the moment. Jennifer had a tough draw in Hong Kong at the beginning of the year and came through in flying colours, let's hope she can repeat that success in Scottsdale.

25th February 2000 (Scottsdale)

There is a pre-Scottsdale interview with Jennifer Capriati up on the Jennifer Capriati WebBoard. Follow the link above. Jennifer has been dumped as the cover star of Tennis World UK magazine this month in favour of Andre Agassi, but there is still a nice article inside about her.

21st February 2000 (Sanex WTA Rankings)

Elena Likhovtseva becomes the latest player to help move Jennifer Capriati up the rankings. Her first match loss in Hannover means that Jennifer has climbed one to a new 2000 high of #15 this week. As Amelie Mauresmo is losing a lot of points next week, Jennifer should move up to #14 next week. Not bad considering she isn't playing at the moment. Only one week until Scottsdale now though! Thank goodness!

7th February 2000 (Sanex WTA Rankings)

Amanda Coetzer's early loss compared to last year at the Tokyo Pan Pacific event means that Jennifer Capriati has moved up one place to #16 in this week's Sanex WTA Singles Rankings.

2nd February 2000 (Poll)

To give you something to do while Jennifer has a break you can vote at the Poll Page! Also, Jennifer Capriati is the cover star of the next issue of the UK's Tennis World Magazine, on sale from February 18th.

31st January 2000 (Sanex WTA Rankings)

As expected, Jennifer Capriati recovers her place in the Top 20 in the latest Sanex WTA Rankings, moving up four places to #17. She has not been ranked this high since 1994. Worth noting is that if the WTA had adopted the same ranking system as the ATP this year, then Jennifer would be ranked #5. As it is, she has to be satisfied with that position on the Race to the Chase 2000 leaderboard. In doubles, Jennifer sweeps upwards a total of sixty places to 134th after her third round Australian Open showing with Jelena Dokic.

27th January 2000 (Scottsdale)

Jennifer Capriati's next WTA event is the State Farm Tennis Championships in Scottsdale, Arizona in the week beginning February 28th. It's a long break, but it will give her a chance to catch her breath and look at all that she has accomplished in the last month: beating the World #1, reaching a Grand Slam semi-final and re-entering the WTA Top 20! Not bad for four weeks work!?!

26th January 2000 (Australian Open)

Jennifer Capriati's fantastic Australian Open run came to an end in the semi-finals at the hands of 2nd-seed and World #2 Lindsay Davenport who defeated her 6-2 7-6 (7-4). Even in the first set Jennifer played well, but Davenport's power, especially on serve, was awesome. In the second set Jennifer began to play even better and many of the games went to deuce. It looked all over when Davenport served for the match at 5-4, but Jennifer hit back and eventually forced a tiebreak. For someone who has been plagued with double faults throughout the tournament, this was a real test, but Jennifer played fantastically throughout the tiebreak, and it took only one dropped point on serve for Davenport to close out the tiebreak 7-4 and move into her first Australian Open final. Jennifer will move to #17 in the next Sanex WTA Singles Rankings.

25th January 2000 (Australian Open)

2nd-seed Lindsay Davenport of the United States (WTA #2) progressed to a semi-final showdown with Jennifer Capriati by cruising past Julie Halard-Decugis 6-1 6-2. Davenport is yet to drop a set at this year's Australian Open. In her post-match interview Jennifer said that the stomach muscle injury was not serious, and would not prove a problem against Davenport on Thursday.

25th January 2000 (Australian Open)

Despite carrying a stomach injury Jennifer Capriati still managed to gain a 6-0 4-0 40-0 advantage over an uninspired Ai Sugiyama before the Japanese player retaliated and gained two consecutive games for 0-6 2-4. However, nothing was stopping Jennifer and she carried on her fantastic play (including much better serving) to reach her first Grand Slam semi-final since 1991 (can you believe it's been that long!?!) with a routine 6-0 6-2 victory. In the semi's she will face either Lindsay Davenport or Julie Halard-Decugis. A lovely story was told by commentators at British EuroSport. Apparently Jennifer was reading a story in the newspaper about a young girl who has inoperable cancer and immediately rang the hospital and invited the girl and her friends and family for a day at the Australian Open as a present. What a beautiful thing to do, Jenn. I've always thought that Jennifer seemed one of the nicest people on the WTA Tour, and this just proves it.

24th January 2000 (Australian Open)

Dominique Van Roost gained some revenge when she and Els Callens defeated Jennifer Capriati and Jelena Dokic 6-4 7-6 (14-12) in the third round of the women's doubles event at the Australian Open. Nevertheless, this has marked the first time since Wimbledon 1992 that Jennifer has won two doubles matches at a tournament, and I hope that the partnership with Dokic will be continued elsewhere.

23rd January 2000 (Australian Open)

It gets better and better: Jennifer Capriati and Jelena Dokic completed a 7-6 (7-4) 6-4 victory over 15th-seeded Karina Habsudova and Anne-Gaelle Sidot to move into the third round of the women's doubles event. There they will face Els Callens (WTA #73: Doubles) and Dominique Van Roost (WTA #43: Doubles) of Belgium. In singles, Jennifer will next play Ai Sugiyama of Japan (WTA #24) who crushed 4th-seed Mary Pierce in straight sets to reach the quarter-finals. Interestingly, Jennifer Capriati has now served the most double faults, twenty-five in all, in the women's event. She will be pleased to note that Sugiyama sits in second place with twenty-four double faults!

22nd January 2000 (Australian Open)

Well I haven't stopped smiling for the last few minutes and I may well go on smiling all night. Jennifer Capriati is once more a Grand Slam quarter-finalist after defeating Patty Schnyder of Switzerland (WTA #29) 6-3 4-6 6-1 in the fourth round of the Australian Open. In the QUARTER-FINALS (yep, I do have to keep saying it!!!) she will play either Mary Pierce, whom she beat 6-4 6-4 in Hong Kong a fortnight ago, or Ai Sugiyama, who has a 2:1 career win:loss record over her. This is Jennifer's best Grand Slam performance since she reached the quarter-finals at Wimbledon in 1993, and should cement her Top 20 position nicely when the rankings are announced at the end of the championships.

22nd January 2000 (Australian Open/Career Money Earnings)

Jennifer Capriati and Jelena Dokic had their second round doubles match against 15th-seeds Karina Habsudova and Anne-Gaelle Sidot suspended because of rain, with Jennifer and Jelena leading 7-6 (7-4) 1-1. Jennifer's last-16 singles match with Patty Schnyder is first on tomorrow/tonight, so the doubles match will be resumed later on. Also, with her appearance at Sydney last week, Jennifer took her career money earnings over the $2m mark. Drinks are on you, Jenn!!!

21st January 2000 (Australian Open)

Jennifer Capriati powered into the fourth round of the Australian Open with a straightforward 6-4 6-4 win over Jing-Qian Yi of China. In the last-16 she will meet Patty Schnyder of Switzerland (WTA # 29), who has already put out last year's runner-up Amelie Mauresmo. Capriati and Schnyder have never played each other before. In doubles, Capriati and Jelena Dokic face 15th-seeds Karina Habsudova of Slovakia (WTA #50: Doubles) and Anne-Gaelle Sidot of France (WTA #34: Doubles) in the second round of the women's doubles event.

20th January 2000 (Australian Open)

Jennifer Capriati and Jelena Dokic stormed through their first round doubles match against Rosa M Andres and Conchita Martinez Granados of Spain 6-2 6-0.

19th January 2000 (Australian Open)

Eeek and Phew!?! Jennifer Capriati squeaked her way into the Australian Open after a 6-1 4-6 8-6 second round victory over 14th-seed Dominique Van Roost. After a tremendous first set, Jenn went completely off the boil at the beginning of the second set, falling behind 0-3 as she did against Schwartz in the first round. It was enough for Van Roost to hold on to take the set 6-4. In the final set Jenn was serving with a break at 3-2 and after some tremendous service points led 40-0. Then she threw in FOUR consecutive double faults, allowing Van Roost a point to level at 3-3, which she did. A gutsy performance serving to stay in the match at 4-5, gave Jenn the confidence to break Van Roost in the next game for a 6-5 lead, but another bad service game let the Belgian back in. Jenn broke back again, and after some good service points, plus another double fault at 7-6, Jenn served an ace on her first match point to move into a third round match with a blast from the past, wildcard Jing-Qian Yi of China (WTA #137). Yi beat Jenn in their only other meeting, at the French Open first round in 1996, the first Grand Slam appearance of Jenn's return to tennis. The winner will face Patty Schnyder, who beat Amelie Mauresmo in the second round, or Nadejda Petrova, who beat Capriati by minutes into being the first main draw Grand Slam match winner of the 21st century on day one of the Australian Open.

18th January 2000 (Miscellaneous)

Jennifer Capriati has gained another endorsement following her Fila deal. This time she has signed with TSR Wireless, a leading American paging and wireless messaging company. Full details in the General Posts section of the Jennifer Capriati WebBoard (link above). Also, I have added an intruiging picture in the Australian Open section (again, link above) of Jennifer helping carry a rowing skull (sounds morbid!) out of the boatshed to the Yarra River with the Australian under 23 Olympic rowing team during a break from the Australian Open. There is also a picture of her rowing with the team, and she looks damn fine! Enjoy!

17th January 2000 (Australian Open)

Jennifer Capriati will face 14th-seed Dominique Van Roost of Belgium (WTA #16) in the second round of the Australian Open. Van Roost defeated talented youngster Kim Clijsters 3-6 6-1 6-1 in the first round. Capriati and Van Roost have never played each other before. Interestingly, Jing-Qian Yi of China is a prospective third round opponent. It was Yi who shocked Jennifer at the 1996 French Open first round, the first Grand Slam match of her comeback. Yi faces Britain's surprise second-rounder Julie Pullin. In doubles, wildcard combination Capriati and Jelena Dokic of Australia (WTA #65: Doubles) take on Rosa M Andres of Spain (WTA #109: Doubles) and Conchita Martinez Granados of Spain (WTA #146: Doubles) in the first round.

16th January 2000 (Australian Open)

Jennifer Capriati defeated Barbara Schwartz of Austria 6-1 7-6 (7-1) in the first round of the Australian Open. The first set was over in eighteen minutes, but Jennifer quickly found herself 0-3 down in the second set. Though she recovered, the second set was erratic, but Jennifer took a deep breath in the tiebreak, and after losing the first point won seven points in a row to win the match. She moves to a second round showdown with either 14th-seed Dominique Van Roost, or the slightly injured Kim Clijsters, who won her second WTA title in Hobart a couple of days ago. Also, Jennifer climbs one to #21 on the latest Sanex WTA singles rankings, and the WTA website notes that Jennifer was/is nominated for WTA Most Improved Player of the Year in the WTA Awards.

16th January 2000 (Australian Open)

Jennifer Capriati and Jelena Dokic of Australia are wildcard entries into the doubles. Could be an intruiging partnership. Also worth noting is that potential second round opponent Kim Clijsters is nursing an injury which is restricting her service action.

13th January 2000 (Australian Open)

Jennifer Capriati faces Barbara Schwartz of Austria (WTA #42) in the first round at the Australian Open, with the winner to face either 14th-seed Dominique Van Roost of Belgium, or her younger compatriot Kim Clijsters. Jennifer was on hand to manually place the positions for the women's top 16 seeds when the draw took place today. As far as Grand Slam draws go, it's not too hard, but not too easy. We'll see what happens.

12th January 2000 (Sydney)

Jennifer Capriati lost 4-6 5-7 to Anna Kournikova in the second round at Sydney. Like their first meeting Jennifer squandered breaks in both sets, though this time to a much worse degree in the first set, where she was leading 4-1 before losing six straight games. In the second set, she was up a break at 2-1, but Kournikova broke right back to lead 3-2, and then 5-3. Though Jennifer pulled back to level at 5-5, the Russian managed to pull out the next two games and win the match.

11th January 2000 (Sydney)

Jennifer Capriati cruised through her first round match against Sandrine Testud of France (WTA #14) in Sydney. She defeated Testud 6-3 6-1 and advances to a second round showdown with Russian star Anna Kournikova (WTA #13), the 8th-seed. The pair have met once before, at Amelia Island last year, with Kournikova recovering from a break down in each set to win 6-3 6-3. But Jennifer has now beaten four players ranked above her already this year (#22 Rubin, #5 Pierce, #1 Hingis and #14 Testud) so hopefully this meeting between the two should go Jennifer's way. The transcript of the interview with Jennifer following her match is up on the Jennifer Capriati WebBoard. Follow the link above.

10th January 2000 (Sanex WTA Rankings)

Jennifer Capriati moves up one place to #22 on the latest Sanex WTA Singles Rankings. This is the highest ranking Jennifer has achieved since she returned to the game in 1996. Also, Jennifer is not playing doubles at Sydney, but she is first on court today against Sandrine Testud in singles. Because of the difference in time zones between the UK and Australia I shall try and post latest results on the Jennifer Capriati WebBoard if I am unable to e-mail them or post them here because I am at work. If you would like to be on the Jennifer Capriati E-Mailing List for latest results and tournament draws then please e-mail me at mark.newman@bigfoot.com and let me know.

9th January 2000 (Sydney International)

Rumours of a doubles pairing between Jennifer Capriati and Anke Huber seem to have been proved false. Huber is playing doubles with Patricia Tarabini in Sydney.

8th January 2000 (Hong Kong Exhibition/Sydney)

CONGRATULATIONS, JENN!!! FIRST TITLE OF 2000!!! JENN BEATS WORLD #1!!!
If she wanted confidence in 2000: she's got it. If she wanted titles in 2000: she's got one. Jennifer Capriati defeated World No.1 Martina Hingis 7-6 (7-3) 4-6 6-3 to win the Millennium Cup exhibition in Hong Kong. It was her second consecutive win over a Top 5 player, and the first time she has beaten a World #1 since November 1996 when she beat Monica Seles in Chicago. If only WTA ranking points were available here!?! I have added to my Hong Kong tournament review, including a link to pictures from the event, check it out at the above link. The Sydney draw is out for next week's event. Jennifer faces Sandrine Testud of France (WTA # 13) in the first round, with the winner to meet either 8th-seeded Anna Kournikova or Sabine Appelmans.

7th January 2000 (Awards)

Jennifer Capriati has won three awards in the 1999 Tennis Magazine Pro Awards. She won Comeback Player of the Year, Most Improved Body and Least Dressed (!?!). The latter was for her appearance in the US Open first round when she apparently wore an incredibly short dress!!!

7th January 2000 (Hong Kong Exhibition)

Jennifer Capriati moved into her first final of the year with a crushing 6-4 6-4 victory over World #5 Mary Pierce in the semi-finals of the Millennium Cup exhibition event in Hong Kong. Jennifer recovered well from a titanic three set struggle against Chanda Rubin yesterday to beat Pierce for the third time in three career meetings. Next she will face World #1 Martina Hingis of Switzerland, whom she has lost to in all three of their career meetings. If Jennifer can consistently beat the likes of Mary Pierce throughout the year then the Top 10 is reachable. Go for it, Jenn! Also, chances are that this site will be moving from www.capriati.com to a new address very soon for reasons I can't discuss. Please follow me wherever I go!

6th January 2000 (Hong Kong Exhibition)

Jennifer Capriati has won her first match of the 21st century, but only just. She defeated 4th-seed Chanda Rubin of the United States (WTA #22) 6-7 (8-10) 7-5 7-5 in the quarter-finals of the 8-player Millennium Cup exhibition event in Hong Kong. She will now face 2nd-seed Mary Pierce of France (WTA #5) in the semi-finals. The pair have only met twice in their careers, both times in the last-16 of the French Open. Capriati won those two meetings, but they were as far back as 1992 and 1993. Mary Pierce is a Top 5 player, and a much better all round player now and it will be tough for Jennifer, but we shall cross our fingers. In doubles, Jennifer and Mary Joe Fernandez were beaten 3-8 by top seeded pair Martina Hingis and Mary Pierce in the semi-finals of the 4-team draw. The match was a one-set match only, with scoring as in doubles qualifying at WTA events. Congratulations to Jennifer on her first win of 2000, I hope there is many more where that came from. Oh, and I would like to crush the rumour that Harold Solomon is no longer working with Jennifer. That is not true, as he is working with her at the moment in Hong Kong.

3rd January 2000 (Hong Kong Exhibition)

Well, the draw has been reshuffled, although Jennifer Capriati has been drawn against 4th-seed Chanda Rubin in singles anyway. However, the doubles teams have shifted around. Jennifer is now playing doubles with Mary Joe Fernandez of the United States (WTA #26: Doubles), and they take on top seeds Martina Hingis of Switzerland (WTA #2: Doubles) and Mary Pierce of France (WTA #20: Doubles), who will be trying out their new doubles partnership for the first time. Still a tough doubles draw for Jennifer, but she has a far more experienced doubles player on her side of the court this time! Keep visiting the Jennifer Capriati WebBoard and in response to my Millennium Resolution to keep this website's tournament reviews section up to date you can find the Hong Kong Exhibition review already started! How's that for service!?!
