Jennifer Capriati Poll!

4th September 2001
CAPRIATI AND HINGIS OUT OF US OPEN DOUBLES

The top-seeded combination of Lisa Raymond and Rennae Stubbs, the doubles world numbers 1 and 2, proved too much for Martina Hingis and Jennifer Capriati, the singles world numbers 1 and 2, defeating them 7-6 (11-9) 6-4 in the US Open women's doubles quarterfinals. It was a close match though, and I hope Jennifer and Martina will pair up in doubles again this year. Lindsay Davenport was knocked back a little in the race for the #1 ranking, after she lost in three sets to Serena Williams in the singles quarterfinals, having been runner-up last year, but Martina Hingis is in no mood to give up her #1 ranking, overpowering Daja Bedanova 6-2 6-0 to reach the semi-finals, successfully defending her points from reaching the same stage last year. Jennifer needs to reach the final and play Serena Williams there to be World #1. Vote for Jennifer as #1 player at CBS Sportsline and vote in the new Poll!.

3rd September 2001
CAPRIATI INTO US OPEN QUARTERFINALS

Jennifer Capriati powered her way into the US Open quarterfinals with a 6-3 6-3 win over 19th-seed Barbara Schett. It is the first year that Jennifer has reached the quarterfinals or better at all four Grand Slams. Not bad, eh? In the last-eight she will face 8th-seed Amelie Mauresmo of France (WTA # 7), who won their only previous meeting in the final at Berlin this year in three sets. It is not just the singles quarterfinals Jennifer powered her way into though, but also the doubles quarterfinals (her first ever women's doubles Grand Slam quarterfinal) with Martina Hingis, after a routine 6-1 6-2 win over Kveta Hrdlickova and Barbara Rittner. In the last eight they face top seeds Lisa Raymond of the United States (WTA Doubles World # 1) and Rennae Stubbs of Australia (WTA Doubles # 2). A tough proposition. Hingis is already into the singles quarterfinals after a shockingly easy win over Jelena Dokic. In the last-eight she faces unseeded Daja Bedanova. Because Barbara Schett was worth less bonus points than Magdalena Maleeva, whom Jennifer was seeded to play in the fourth round, Jennifer now needs to reach at least the final to become World #1. Vote for Jennifer as #1 player at CBS Sportsline and vote in the new Poll!.

1st September 2001
CAPRIATI FIGHTS BACK FOR FOURTH ROUND PLACE

Jennifer Capriati recovered from 1-4 in the first set and 1-3 in the second set to defeat Virginia Ruano-Pascual 6-4 6-4 in the US Open third round. In the fourth round she will face 19th-seed Barbara Schett of Austria (WTA # 19). Schett has won their last two meetings. In doubles, Jennifer and Martina Hingis will face Kveta Hrdlickova of the Czech Republic (WTA Doubles # 73) and Barbara Rittner of Germany (WTA Doubles # 47) in the women's doubles third round. Jennifer has a well-deserved day off tomorrow, after competing in singles, women's doubles and mixed doubles in the first week of the year's final Grand Slam. Vote for Jennifer as #1 player at CBS Sportsline and vote in the new Poll!.

31st August 2001
CAPRIATI/HINGIS INTO DOUBLES LAST-16

For the sixth time in her career Jennifer Capriati has reached the last-16 of a Grand Slam women's doubles event, this time with Martina Hingis, crushing Amy Frazier and Katie Schlukebir 6-2 6-2. Could this be the first time Jennifer goes on to reach a Grand Slam women's doubles quarterfinal? The draw looks good, as she and Martina will play either Hrdlickova/Rittner or Dhenin/Diaz-Oliva in the third round. Three cheers also to Martina Hingis for staying in the doubles after battling a cold and a 4-6 6-4 7-6 (7-5) victory over Iva Majoli earlier in the day! Vote for Jennifer as #1 player at CBS Sportsline and vote in the new Poll!.

30th August 2001
CAPRIATI RUSHES INTO THIRD ROUND

Jennifer Capriati was in a hurry to reach the third round of this year's US Open, defeating Evie Dominikovic 6-2 6-0 to get there. The scoreline emphasises the improvements Jennifer has made in the last two years, since the last time they met at the Australian Open 1999, Jennifer needed a 5-7 6-3 8-6 scoreline to win. In the third round Jennifer will face Virginia Ruano-Pascual of Spain (WTA # 57), who defeated Martina Hingis in the first round at Wimbledon. Jennifer got a chance to play Ruano-Pascual a couple of days early, when she and her brother Steven lost 5-7 3-6 to Ruano-Pascual and Lucas Arnold in the mixed doubles first round. Not a bad scoreline, considering Ruano-Pascual is inside the Top 10 in women's doubles rankings. Let's hope the Capriati duo play at all four Grand Slams next year. Vote for Jennifer as #1 player at CBS Sportsline and vote in the new Poll!.

29th August 2001
CAPRIATI/HINGIS MOVE ON IN US OPEN DOUBLES

Jennifer Capriati and Martina Hingis won their first round doubles match against Kim Grant and Lilia Osterloh 6-1 6-3. In the second round they face Amy Frazier (WTA Doubles # 95) and Katie Schlukebir (WTA Doubles # 65) of the United States. Jennifer is playing her second round singles match and first round mixed doubles match tomorrow. Vote for Jennifer as #1 player at CBS Sportsline and vote in the new Poll!.

28th August 2001
SWIFT START FOR CAPRIATI AT US OPEN

Jennifer Capriati rushed past qualifier Amanda Hopmans 6-2 6-1 in the US Open first round. In the second round she will face Evie Dominikovic of Australia (WTA # 67). The mixed doubles draw has been announced, and Jennifer has been given a wildcard into the event, partnering her brother Steven Capriati (ATP Doubles # NR). They face Lucas Arnold of Argentina (ATP Doubles # 32) and Virginia Ruano Pascual of Spain (WTA Doubles # 8) in the first round. They may not be looking ahead to the second round, but should they win their first match they will play either top seeds Rennae Stubbs and Todd Woodbridge or Max Mirnyi and Martina Navratilova in the second round! Jennifer has also been nominated for Sportswoman of the Year by the USA Women's Sports Association. The winner will be announced on October 15. Vote for Jennifer as #1 player at CBS Sportsline and vote in the new Poll!.

25th August 2001
QUALIFIER FOR CAPRIATI IN US OPEN FIRST ROUND

Jennifer Capriati will meet qualifier Amanda Hopmans of the Netherlands (WTA #142) in the US Open first round. The nail-biting begins - the US Open is the first tournament where Jennifer has a mathematical chance to finish the event as the #1 player in the world!?! She must reach at least the semi-finals though, so let's not get too excited. The way she has been playing this year and in recent weeks it is a definite possibility, but even if she does not achieve it at this event, it is a real chance to get closer to the top spot. Who would have thought, eh! What a fantastic year it has been! Jennifer's current schedule after the US Open is Tokyo (Princess Cup), Filderstadt, Zurich and the Sanex WTA Tour Championships. She is also likely to be part of the USA Fed Cup team. Vote for Jennifer as #1 player at CBS Sportsline and vote in the new Poll!.

24th August 2001
VENUS WILLIAMS WINS TWO MATCHES TO REACH NEW HAVEN FINAL, DAVENPORT WINS NONE!

Jennifer Capriati recovered from 1-4 down in the second set, but still chalked up her second straight sets loss of the year in the New Haven semi-finals, falling 4-6 6-7 (1-7) to 3rd-seed Venus Williams, who earlier in the day had defeated Justine Henin in three sets. Lindsay Davenport, in contrast, played no matches today to reach the final, after Kim Clijsters pulled out of their semi-final with a thigh injury. If Lindsay Davenport defeats Venus Williams in the final tomorrow, she will move to #2, though she will only be thirteen points ahead of Jennifer! Vote for Jennifer as #1 player at CBS Sportsline and vote in the new Poll!.

24th August 2001
CAPRIATI AND HINGIS TEAM FOR US OPEN DOUBLES

Oh my God!?! Jennifer Capriati and Martina Hingis of Switzerland (WTA Doubles #10) will play doubles together at the US Open!?! I have always thought that it would be a fun combination, but I have my doubts about Jennifer teaming with someone with whom she could go a long way through the draw after playing two weeks of tennis going into the US Open. But I'm sure she knows her own limits. The duo are unseeded, and face Kim Grant of South Africa (WTA Doubles #93) and Lilia Osterloh of the United States (WTA Doubles #89) in the first round. They are scheduled to meet top seeds Lisa Raymond and Rennae Stubbs in the quarterfinals. The quarterfinal New Haven match between Venus Williams and Justine Henin was rained off last night and will be the first match on today, with the winner to face Jennifer later in the day. Vote for Jennifer as #1 player at CBS Sportsline and vote in the new Poll!.

23rd August 2001
GOOD WIN FOR CAPRIATI OVER DOKIC

Jennifer Capriati has won her third consecutive meeting with Jelena Dokic, 6-4 6-3, to move into the New Haven semi-finals, where she will meet either Venus Williams or Justine Henin, who meet later tonight. A chance to avenge her Miami loss or her Wimbledon loss, depending on who gets through! Jennifer will be pleased that though she still struggled with her service games at times, she managed to serve a total of ten aces in the match against Dokic. Talking of struggling in service games, at 4-4 in the first set Jennifer held her serve after an eighteen-point game, six deuces and five breakpoints!?! By the way, whichever rules you follow, mine (excluding the 1989 Wightman Cup match) or the WTA's, Jennifer's play over the past week has given her her 300th career WTA match win. Congratulations, Jen! Vote for Jennifer as #1 player at CBS Sportsline and vote in the new Poll!.

22nd August 2001
US OPEN DRAW RELEASED AS CAPRIATI BATTLES IN NEW HAVEN

The US Open draw has been released and 2nd-seed Jennifer Capriati will face a qualifier in the opening round, with the winner to face either Maria Jose Martinez or Evie Dominikovic in the second round. Jennifer is seeded to meet 32nd-seed Francesca Schiavone in the third round, 15th-seed Magdalena Maleeva in the fourth round, 8th-seed Amelie Mauresmo in the quarterfinals and 4th-seed Venus Williams in the semi-finals. Lindsay Davenport is the first of the top four to meet 10th-seed Serena Williams, though they cannot meet before the quarterfinals. Away from the pressures of the year's final Grand Slam, Jennifer Capriati was still under pressure in the New Haven event as she battled back from losing the opening set in eighteen minutes to defeat Anke Huber 0-6 6-3 6-2. In the quarterfinals she will face Jelena Dokic of Yugoslavia (WTA #14). Vote for Jennifer as #1 player at CBS Sportsline and vote in the new Poll!.

21st August 2001
CAPRIATI AND HUBER MEET AGAIN

As predicted Jennifer Capriati will play Anke Huber of Germany (WTA # 17) in the second round at New Haven. Jennifer and Anke played last week in the Toronto semi-finals, with Jennifer winning 6-3 3-6 6-3. Huber defeated Magui Serna 6-2 6-2 in the opening New Haven round. Meanwhile, Jennifer has officially been announced as the 2nd-seed for this year's US Open. It is, not surprisingly, her highest-ever seeding at a Grand Slam event. 19th August 2001
CAPRIATI COMES UP SHORT IN TORONTO THREE-SETTER

What a match... eventually! Serena Williams had the upper-hand totally until a two hour rain delay intruded when she led 6-1 1-1. After the weather's interruption Jennifer still seemed lacklustre, but fought harder to get on the scoreboard. Serena broke to lead 4-3, but Jennifer broke straight back. Serena broke again to lead 6-5 and serve for the match, but Jennifer broke back to force the tiebreak. The breaker was full of drama as line judges, umpire and players all played their part. Jennifer lost a 4-1 and 5-3 lead, and Serena missed a matchpoint at 7-6. Jennifer eventually won the tiebreaker 9-7, and incredibly we were into a final set. Jennifer was pumped up for the match now and built up a 2-0 lead, only to be forced back to 2-2. Serving at 3-3, Serena Williams cranked up the power on her serve and got an easy game to lead 4-3. The power then went up on her groundstrokes and she broke to lead 5-3. Serving for the match again, Serena found herself 15-40 down, but fought back to deuce and converted her second matchpoint. Phew!?! Jennifer will be disappointed, but should not be downhearted as she made much more of a match of it than looked possible after she lost the first set 1-6. Jennifer is playing New Haven next week, and goes into the US Open the following week as the 2nd-seed. Vote for Jennifer as #1 player at CBS Sportsline, as sexiest female tennis player at Match.com and vote in the new Poll!.

18th August 2001
SEVENTH WTA FINAL OF THE YEAR FOR CAPRIATI

Jennifer Capriati celebrated the third birthday of this website with a hard-fought 6-3 3-6 6-3 victory over Anke Huber in the Toronto semi-finals to reach her seventh WTA final of the year so far. There she will meet 4th-seed Serena Williams of the United States (WTA #10), who defeated Monica Seles 7-5 7-6 (7-5) in their semi-final. Jennifer has won their last four meetings. Jennifer seemed to be coasting against Huber, leading 6-3 2-0, but Huber won the next five games to put herself in a winning position in the second set. In the final set, Jennifer let a 3-0 lead slip back to 3-3, before winning the next three games to take the match. She will need to be in much better form to beat Serena Williams in the final, but all credit to her for gutsing out her matches this week. May I also say a huge thank you to everyone who has visited this site since it began on this day three years ago. I get a huge amount of supportive e-mails and people always have nice things to say about the site. It has been great to see Jennifer improve from #110 in the world the week I started this site to where she is this week!!! I hope to have this site here following her progress for the rest of her career, so thanks again for all the support. 18th August 2001
NEW HAVEN DRAW ANNOUNCED

Jennifer Capriati could be meeting Anke Huber again quite quickly. They are due to face each other in the Toronto semi-finals today, but could meet up again in the second round at New Haven next week. Jennifer is the 2nd-seed and has a first round bye. She will face either Huber or Magui Serna in the second round, and is seeded to meet Elena Dementieva in the quarterfinals, defending champion Venus Williams in the semi-finals and top seed Lindsay Davenport in the final. Both Capriati and Davenport will be adding points to their singles rankings as neither played the event last year. Davenport is now as big a threat as Venus Williams and Martina Hingis to Jennifer's chances of becoming World #1 later this year. Vote for Jennifer as #1 player at CBS Sportsline, as sexiest female tennis player at Match.com and vote in the new Poll!.

17th August 2001
CAPRIATI INTO TORONTO SEMI-FINALS

Jennifer Capriati has followed up her third round win over Wynne Prakusya with a 7-5 6-4 quarterfinal win over 9th-seed Meghann Shaughnessy. It was always going to be difficult, both playing their second match of the day after yesterday's weather washout, but Shaughnessy was determined to make it as difficult as possible. After an early exchange of breaks in the opening set, Shaughnessy broke again to lead 5-4. Serving for the set she then had a set point, but Jennifer broke back and went on to take the first set 7-5. Shaughnessy started brightly in the second set and built up a 3-1 lead, but Jennifer again fought back to win the match. Pity poor Meghann, who now has to play a doubles match!?!. In the semi-finals Jennifer will face 14th-seed Anke Huber of Germany (WTA #21), who has announced her intention to retire at next year's Australian Open, so she will certainly be giving it her all. The other semi-final is a mouthwatering clash between Monica Seles and Serena Williams. Vote for Jennifer as #1 player at CBS Sportsline, as sexiest female tennis player at Match.com and vote in the new Poll!.

17th August 2001
TWO MATCHES FOR JENNIFER AFTER YESTERDAY'S RAIN

Jennifer Capriati has defeated qualifier Wynne Prakusya 7-6 (7-2) 6-2 to reach the quarterfinals at Toronto, despite a somewhat lacklustre performance. Because of yesterday's rain, Jennifer will be back in action later today against 9th-seed Meghann Shaughnessy of the United States (WTA #14) in their last-eight match. In the first set against Prakusya, Jennifer was up a break no less than four times, but required a tiebreak to capture the set. In the second set Prakusya went a break ahead at 2-1, but Jennifer stepped up a gear and won the next five games to take the match. In doing so, she also ensured she will be back at World #2 next week and at least the 2nd-seed for the US Open in two weeks time. 15th August 2001
CAPRIATI TO MEET QUALIFIER IN TORONTO THIRD ROUND

Top seed Jennifer Capriati will meet qualifier Wynne Prakusya of Indonesia (WTA #117) in the third round at Toronto. A win would send her back to #2 in the singles rankings and into the 2nd-seed slot for the US Open. Jennifer was at Macy's in New York on August 11th, signing autographs. 14th August 2001
CAPRIATI BATTLES INTO TORONTO THIRD ROUND

Wow! Let me introduce to you another young WTA star - Daniela Hantuchova. The Slovakian, ranked #54, pushed Jennifer Capriati to the limit in the opening two sets of their second round match in Toronto, building up a 7-5 4-1 lead and showing such dominating form that it looked like a second consecutive straight sets loss for Jennifer. However, Capriati was also playing her best and stepped it up the barest of notches to fight back and take the second set 7-5. In the final set, Hantuchova began to tire and regret her missed opportunities and before too long Jennifer was serving for the match at 5-1. Though Hantuchova saved a match point, and broke back, she fell behind 0-40 on her next service game and Jennifer only needed one of those three match points to win 5-7 7-5 6-2. A tremendous match of the highest quality. Watch out for Daniela Hantuchova in the future. In the third round Jennifer faces Meilin Tu or Wynne Prakusya, who meet tomorrow. Jen will be pleased for the day off, I am sure! Tu defeated 17th-seed Iroda Tulyaganova 3-6 6-3 6-4 in their first round match today. A win in the third round will send Jennifer back to #2 in the world. Vote for Jennifer as #1 player at CBS Sportsline, as sexiest female tennis player at Match.com and vote in the new Poll!.

13th August 2001
CAPRIATI FACES HANTUCHOVA IN FIRST TORONTO MATCH

Jennifer Capriati, the Toronto top seed, takes on Daniela Hantuchova of Slovakia (WTA #54) in the second round, after a first round bye. Hantuchova defeated a qualifier in the opening round. The pair have met once before, in the Oklahoma semi-finals in February, with Jennifer winning 6-4 3-6 6-2. Jennifer needs to reach the quarterfinals at Toronto to reclaim the #2 ranking from Lindsay Davenport. 12th August 2001
JENNIFER CAPRIATI TOP SEED AT TORONTO

She is seeded to meet Iroda Tulyaganova in the third round, Meghann Shaughnessy or Magdalena Maleeva in the quarterfinals, Amelie Mauresmo in the semi-finals and either Monica Seles, Justine Henin or Serena Williams in the final. Jennifer is not playing doubles. In tomorrow's rankings, Jennifer will fall to #3 after Lindsay Davenport won the Los Angeles event and reclaimed the #2 ranking. 11th August 2001
CHANGES TO TORONTO FIELD

There have been some interesting changes to the line-up for next week's Toronto event. Jennifer Capriati will now be the top seed after the withdrawal of Martina Hingis with a foot injury. Hingis was the defending champion and is one of Jennifer's rivals for the end-of-year #1 ranking. Another rival, Lindsay Davenport, has also withdrawn, with a wrist injury. Neither players are likely to miss the US Open, as both Hingis and Davenport are still competing in the Los Angeles semi-finals later today. Just to keep Jennifer on her toes next week though, Monica Seles, who is the only player to defeat Jennifer in straight sets this year, has been confirmed as a late entry to the Toronto event. Vote for Jennifer as #1 player at CBS Sportsline, as sexiest female tennis player at Match.com and vote in the new Poll!.

7th August 2001
CAPRIATI AIMING FOR #1 RANKING WITH TOKYO ENTRY

Jennifer Capriati is aiming for the #1 ranking by the end of the year, and has confirmed her intentions with a late entry into the Tokyo Princess Cup event two weeks after the US Open. Hot on the heels of her entry came the news that one of Jennifer's main rivals for the #1 ranking, Venus Williams, had withdrawn to avoid playing her sister Serena. TIGHT DOUBLES LOSS FOR CAPRIATI/SANCHEZ VICARIO

Jennifer Capriati is still ten years away from her last (and first) WTA doubles title, after she and Arantxa Sanchez Vicario lost a hard-fought doubles semi-final in San Diego. Martina Hingis and Anna Kournikova, the top seeds, defeated them 6-2 5-7 6-3. In singles, Lindsay Davenport's semi-final loss to Venus Williams means that Jennifer will remain at #2 in the world rankings next week. Jennifer's next event is Toronto in a couple of weeks. They were leading 6-1 when their opponents retired from the match. In the semi-finals they face top seeds Martina Hingis of Switzerland (WTA Doubles #7) and Anna Kournikova of Russia (WTA Doubles #6), reunited for the first time in quite a while. Congratulations, Jen!!! The San Diego draw has been revealed. Jennifer is seeded third and has a first round bye. In the second round she will meet Anne-Gaelle Sidot or Shinobu Asagoe. She is seeded to meet Jelena Dokic in the third round, Monica Seles in the quarterfinals, and is in Martina Hingis' half of the draw, meaning that she could not play Lindsay Davenport and Venus Williams until the final. FOURTH MAHWAH WIN FOR CAPRIATI

Jennifer Capriati wins Mahwah Exhibition 2001 Jennifer Capriati has won her fourth Mahwah exhibition title with a 6-3 6-4 win over Amanda Coetzer. Windy conditions made serving difficult - Jennifer dropped serve five times, while Coetzer lost her serve eight times. Jennifer served for the match at 6-3 5-3, was up 30-15 and then served three consecutive double faults to hand Coetzer the game! These are the kind of kinks that an exhibition can help iron out before a return to the WTA Tour! Jennifer is planning to play San Diego, Toronto and New Haven before the US Open. The Mahwah event has been good to Jennifer Capriati. She also won the event in 1991, 1993 and 1999, and was runner-up twice as well, in 1990 and 1992. Lee defeated Kriventcheva in straight sets, chatted to the media about playing Jennifer in the exhibition, and then an hour later withdrew so she could take part in the qualifying event at Stanford this weekend. 2nd-seed Amanda Coetzer faces Anne Kremer in the other semi-final on Saturday. Kremer defeated Jennifer Hopkins, a late replacement for Conchita Martinez, 6-1 6-1. Don't forget to vote for Jennifer as #1 player at CBS Sportsline and vote in the new Poll!.

CAPRIATI WITHDRAWS FROM STANFORD

Jennifer Capriati has withdrawn from Stanford, seriously denting her chances of gaining the #2 ranking in the next few weeks. It is an odd choice given that the #2 and #1 rankings are within her grasp. Had she played Stanford and not San Diego, she could still have taken a wildcard into San Diego if she lost early at Stanford, so she would not lose a chance to gain ranking points. If she loses early at San Diego, she is stuffed. With Venus Williams saying she will step up her schedule for the rest of the year in order to claim the #1 ranking it seems an odd move. But let's give her the benefit of the doubt - perhaps she has a friend's wedding to attend that week or something like that. I guess she'll go for the #1 ranking the hard way!!! She will play San Diego and the Canadian Open before the US Open. She is scheduled to play New Haven, but I don't really see her playing the week before the US Open. Jennifer also attended one of Madonna's recent shows in London - hope she enjoyed it! Don't forget to vote for Jennifer as #1 player at CBS Sportsline and vote in the new Poll!.

JENNIFER CAPRIATI: WORLD #3

Jennifer Capriati moves up to a new career high of World #3 in the latest Sanex WTA singles rankings, following her run through to the Wimbledon semi-finals. She had two chances to clinch the #2 ranking at Wimbledon. Had she beaten Justine Henin to reach the final, she would have been assured the #2 ranking win or lose. After losing in the semi-final though, she still could have been #2 if Venus Williams had lost in the final. Anyway, the race for #2 is a lot harder with the news that Venus Williams is to make a run for the #1 ranking for the rest of this year and will play more tournaments to help her get there. Jennifer is still 700 points off her nearest rival, Martina Hingis, in points for the year so far though. Should be interesting! JUSTINE HENIN DENIES CAPRIATI THE CHANCE FOR COMPLETE GRAND SLAM 2001

Justine Henin played an inspired match to recover from a disappointing first set and outplay Jennifer Capriati 2-6 6-4 6-2 to reach her first Grand Slam final. Apart from a rushed start to the third set, Jennifer did nothing wrong. Justine Henin simply stepped up to the challenge in the second set, found her range with some incredible shots and kept the pressure on Jennifer right until matchpoint. Even a rain delay when leading 4-1 in the final set could not stop Henin. Jennifer has said she is not too disappointed, and why on earth should she be. I was disappointed for a moment, then realised Jennifer has won the Australian Open and the French Open and reached the semi-finals of Wimbledon, and will be at a new career high of at least World #3 next week. Not bad, eh! If Venus Williams loses in the final then Jennifer will be World #2. And Venus will not be underestimating Henin, after all, as the elder Williams sister said after her semi-final win, she knows Henin is good, because 'you've got to be real good to beat Jennifer Capriati in 2001'. EPIC WIN FOR JENNIFER AS SHE REACHES WIMBLEDON SEMI-FINALS

Wow! Jennifer Capriati came back from the brink of defeat against an impressive Serena Williams 6-7 (4-7) 7-5 6-3 to reach the Wimbledon semi-finals. Jennifer broke to lead 4-3 in the first set, and a few games later was at set point at 5-4. Two more set points came and went before Serena broke back to level the set. Jennifer broke right back to serve for the set again at 6-5, but Williams stopped her again. Serena dominated the first set tiebreak, winning it 7-4. In the second set Williams began to complain of a stomach problem, but broke to lead 2-1. Jennifer broke back, but Serena again broke to lead 3-2. Both girls took an injury timeout - Serena to get some food to settle her stomach, and Jennifer for her knee injury and a strained hip muscle. A few games later Jennifer was serving at 6-7 4-5 and 0-30, two points from defeat. She didn't drop another point in that game, and broke Williams to 15 as she served for the match. Visibly stepping it up, it was the first two of nine consecutive games for Jennifer as she levelled the match to thunderous applause from the Centre Court crowd, and built up a 5-0 lead in the final set. Williams was obviously distressed by her stomach ache and sickness, but refused to lie down without a fight. Helped by Jennifer dropping her serve to love as she served for the match at 5-1, Serena pulled back three games. This time Jennifer was not to be beaten, and served out the match to love for a monumental win, that will boost her confidence yet again and keeps alive her chances of a third consecutive Grand Slam title. In the semi-finals she faces 8th-seed Justine Henin of Belgium (WTA # 9), who was in no mood to wait in her quarterfinal, crushing former Wimbledon champion Conchita Martinez 6-1 6-0 for her second consecutive Grand Slam semi-final. And in case we are not celebrating enough - Jennifer's win over Serena ensures that she will be at least World #3 in the next Sanex WTA singles rankings, a new career high! JENNIFER AND SERENA MEET IN WIMBLEDON QUARTERFINALS

Jennifer Capriati was back to Grand Slam-winning form today, with an impressive 6-1 6-2 win over 15th-seed Sandrine Testud to reach her third Grand Slam quarterfinal of the year. There, as at the French Open, she will meet 5th-seed Serena Williams of the United States (WTA #5), who has already commented that their French Open meeting was a disaster for her and she expects to play a much better match tomorrow. It will be tough. All three contenders for the #2 ranking are still head-to-head, as Lindsay Davenport and Venus Williams joined Jennifer in the quarterfinals. A win over Serena will ensure Jennifer moves to #3, and she will need to reach the final to make #2. LAST-16 WIMBLEDON SLOT FOR CAPRIATI

Jennifer Capriati had a very bad day at the office, but still got the job done. In a messy, quite-painful-to-watch match, Jennifer recovered from 1-2 down in the first set and 1-4 down in the second set to win 6-4 6-4. In the fourth round she will be hoping to play better against 15th-seed Sandrine Testud of France (WTA #19), who needed three sets to defeat Ai Sugiyama 6-7 (5-7) 6-2 6-2 in their third round match. Incidentally, Jennifer's win over Panova is her 37th singles win on the WTA Tour this year. That's one more win than all of last year! In mixed doubles, though Jennifer and Steven Capriati recovered somewhat from losing the first five games against 9th-seeds Nicole Arendt and Mark Knowles, they still lost the match 1-6 4-6. CORINA MORARIU IN REMISSION

Corina Morariu has received the news that her leukaemia is in remission. That is fabulous news, and I wish her well and hope she gets better as quickly as possible. She was interviewed on TV this week and had this to say about Jennifer dedicating her French Open trophy to her: "It is difficult for me to put into words how special that was and how much that meant to me ... to see it on TV and seeing Jennifer dedicating her trophy and her win to me," she said. "I was speechless for about a half hour. ... I will be forever grateful for that". CAPRIATI INTO THIRD ROUND

Jennifer Capriati was impressive as she powered into the third round at Wimbledon with a straightforward 6-3 6-1 win over Francesca Schiavone. She will now play 32nd-seed Tatiana Panova of Russia (WTA #34). But the big news is that Jennifer is playing mixed doubles with her brother Steven!!! Steven does not have a ranking, and in fact has not had one for some time, but the pair were awarded a wildcard. They face a tough proposition as they take on 9th-seeds Mark Knowles of the Bahamas (ATP Doubles #22) and Nicole Arendt of the United States (WTA Doubles #11). Looks like she turned down John McEnroe then!?! CAPRIATI CRUISES AS HINGIS FALLS

Jennifer Capriati cruised into the second round at Wimbledon with a comfortable 6-3 6-2 win over Maria Alejandra Vento, but top seed and World #1 Martina Hingis was crushed 4-6 2-6 by Virginia Ruano Pascual of Spain. Her #1 ranking can't be captured at these championships, but the loss puts Capriati, Lindsay Davenport and Venus Williams a lot closer to it. Jennifer started her match slowly, falling behind 0-2 and 1-3 and Vento had a point for 4-2, but from 1-3 down Jennifer won the next nine games to lead 6-3 4-0, and that was pretty much that. In the second round Jennifer will play Francesca Schiavone of Italy (WTA # 35), who needed three sets to defeat Marissa Irvin in their first round match. CAPRIATI AND MCENROE IN MIXED DOUBLES COMBINATION?

Former tennis badboy John McEnroe has hinted that he may team with Jennifer Capriati in mixed doubles at this year's US Open. McEnroe said that the idea was first floated around after Jennifer won the French Open. Jennifer is not playing women's doubles at Wimbledon next week, where she is second on Centre Court in singles on Monday, after defending champion Pete Sampras. WIMBLEDON DRAW PUBLISHED

Jennifer Capriati is seeded 4th at this year's Wimbledon Championships and takes on Maria Alejandro Vento of Venezuela (WTA #117) in the first round. The winner will face either Marissa Irvin or Francesca Schiavone in the second round. Jennifer is again seeded to meet Serena Williams in the quarterfinals and Martina Hingis in the semi-finals. Jennifer is obviously still feeling the fatigue from winning her second Grand Slam singles title, as she has not entered the doubles at Wimbledon. It's the first time she has missed a women's doubles event at a Grand Slam since Wimbledon 1999. Her doubles ranking will suffer, as she reached the last-16 last year with Jelena Dokic. NO WIMBLEDON WARM-UP FOR CAPRIATI

Jennifer Capriati has withdrawn from next week's WTA event at s'Hertogenbosch, where she would have been the top seed, with exhaustion following her French Open win last weekend. Jennifer will be looking to win her third consecutive Grand Slam singles title at Wimbledon, beginning on June 25. With Lindsay Davenport playing at Eastbourne next week, it could be a while yet before Jennifer takes her place in the Top 3. CAPRIATI ROLLS IN THE MILLIONS!

Jennifer Capriati's second consecutive Grand Slam title at the French Open has sent her prize money total for the year well over the $1m mark. She has now earned $1,526,640 for the year so far. Her win also sends her over the $4m career prize money barrier, with earnings of $4,014,640. It is only two months since Jennifer crossed the $3m career prize money mark. The drinks are on Jennifer!!! In the Sanex WTA singles rankings, Jennifer remains at #4, but cuts the gap between her and #3 Lindsay Davenport to just 76 points, and rests an attainable 537 points behind #2 Venus Williams. World #1 Martina Hingis is still a tiny dot in the distance though, 1433 points ahead of Jennifer. But another two Grand Slam titles in 2001 should cover that!?! Jennifer Capriati wins French Open 2001 JENNIFER CAPRIATI
FRENCH OPEN CHAMPION

I'm just off to casualty to see if my heart is still beating!?! Jennifer Capriati recovered from a hugely disappointing start to defeat 12th-seed Kim Clijsters 1-6 6-4 12-10. I cannot congratulate Clijsters enough on her poise and confidence in her first Grand Slam final - the first of many on today's evidence. Clijsters came out firing on all cylinders in the first set, and was really playing Capriati at her own game. She hit blinding forehands and backhands and served fantastically, leaving Jennifer wondering what was going on. The second set was edgy for us Capriati fans. Although Jennifer stayed ahead for most of the set, she was still struggling to find her consistency. The final set was the epic to end all epics though. Both players stood their ground in the opening few games, and for Jennifer fans it was thrilling to see Jennifer consistently holding her serve so well when serving to stay in the match on four occasions. Jennifer served for the match at 7-6, and her service game went to three deuces, with Clijsters converting her fourth break point. Jennifer served for it again at 10-9, having won the last eight points, but dropped her serve to 15. But finally, serving at 11-10, she set herself up with two matchpoints at 40-15 on serve. The first matchpoint looked like a crosscourt winner, but it just missed the line, but Jennifer got the job done on her second matchpoint for an epic victory. It was the longest French Open women's final ever, and the first time that a player had won both the Australian Open and French Open in the same year since 1992 when Monica Seles won the first two Slams of the year. It is also the first time in her career that Jennifer has won more than two WTA singles titles in one year! Pictures from the final here. GRAND SLAM FINAL #2 FOR JENNIFER!!!

Jennifer Capriati is into her second Grand Slam final of the year after an impressive 6-4 6-3 win over World #1 Martina Hingis, her third successive win over the Swiss player. The scoreline matched the Australian Open final scoreline, and just as she was there, Jennifer was in total command, leaving Hingis looking like she didn't know what to do. Martina Hingis says she lost the Australian Open final because she was tired from beating both Williams sisters and playing doubles, but she has had an easy route through to the French Open semi-finals and has not played doubles. She knows that something needs to be done with her game now more than ever to justify that #1 ranking. As for Jennifer, she had us worried for a while. After going 4-1 up in the first set, she took an injury time out to have the trainer on court to deal with a knee injury. It would be such a shame if Jennifer's name were to be added to the already huge list of injury casualties for the year so far. After treatment though, it did not seem to bother her anymore, but we will know more once she has completed her post-match interview. In the French Open final Jennifer will take on 12th-seed Kim Clijsters of Belgium (WTA #14) and she should not underestimate her. The last time a women went into a Grand Slam final as the favourite to play the 12th-seed she was hugely embarrassed! Yep, that was in this year's Australian Open final, where Jennifer was the 12th-seed!!! Don't forget to vote for Jennifer as #1 player at CBS Sportsline.

CAPRIATI BACK IN THE FRENCH OPEN SEMI-FINALS AFTER 11 YEARS

Jennifer Capriati returned to the French Open semi-finals for the first time in eleven years with a tentative 6-2 5-7 6-2 win over 6th-seed Serena Williams, her third successive victory over the younger Williams sister. It was not a pretty match, with errors a-plenty from both players and Jennifer herself admitted that she needed to quell thoughts of her Miami loss to Venus Williams after double-faulting on match point at 6-2 5-4 and failing to clinch the second set. Serena Williams had three points for a 2-0 lead in the final set, but Jennifer held on to her serve to make it 1-1 and gently pulled away to take the final set, as much to do with Serena's errors as her own good play. But a win is a win, and she will put the match to the back of her mind, enjoy her day's rest and come back refreshed for her semi-final with top seed and World #1 Martina Hingis of Switzerland. It is a repeat of the Australian Open final, and Jennifer will be gunning for her third successive win over the World #1. Ai Sugiyama was obviously not too happy with her French Open doubles partnership with Jennifer. She has announced that she will partner Kim Clijsters in doubles at Wimbledon! DOUBLES LOSS FOR CAPRIATI/SUGIYAMA

Jennifer Capriati and Ai Sugiyama lost a tight three set match with Kimberly Po and Nathalie Tauziat in the French Open third round 6-7 (4-7) 7-6 (7-5) 4-6. Capriati/Sugiyama held three set points in the first set, before losing it on a tiebreak. In the second set they recovered from 1-4 down, and three matchpoints down to take it to a third set, but after falling behind 1-4 again it was always going to be a struggle. Hopefully they will team up again at Wimbledon. Don't forget to vote in the trying-to-be-Weekly (!?!) Poll! and vote for Jennifer as #1 player at CBS Sportsline.

CAPRIATI INTO FRENCH OPEN QUARTERFINALS

Jennifer Capriati has reached the quarterfinals of the French Open for the first time since 1993 with a 7-5 6-1 win over 16th-seed Meghann Shaughnessy. The first set was tight as both players struggled to find their rhythm in the windy conditions. Shaughnessy seemed to have the slight edge. She had points for 5-3 and 6-5 for an opportunity to serve for the set, but Jennifer held on. And anyways, in a set with six consecutive breaks of serve after the first two games, serving for the set meant nothing! In the second set though, Jennifer was supremely confident, dropping only one point (a double fault) in the first three games, and only nine points in the whole set to win it 6-1. In the quarterfinals she will face 6th-seed Serena Williams of the United States (WTA #7). Don't forget to vote in the trying-to-be-Weekly (!?!) CAPRIATI VERSUS SHAUGHNESSY IN LAST-16

Jennifer Capriati booked a last-16 place with 16th-seed Meghann Shaughnessy of the United States (WTA #20) with a straightforward 6-3 6-1 win over big-hitting qualifier Mirjana Lucic. Lucic showed many times why she has the potential to break back into the Top 50 soon, but on a very windy day showed no restraint against Jennifer, frequently spraying shots long and wide. Jennifer pulled back on her power game to cope with the blustery conditions and got the job done. Shaughnessy is a tough opponent. She plays a lot of tournaments and has steadily worked her way up the rankings over the last twelve months. However, Jennifer will take heart from the fact that Shaughnessy does not have a good record against power-players this year, losing in straight sets consistently to the likes of Venus Williams, Lindsay Davenport and even Alicia Molik. Capriati and Shaughnessy play tomorrow (Sunday), when all the women's last-16 matches will be played. In doubles, Jennifer and Ai will play 4th-seeds Kimberly Po of the United States (WTA Doubles #17) and Nathalie Tauziat of France (WTA Doubles #7) in the third round. THREE SET DOUBLES WIN FOR JENNIFER AND AI

Jennifer Capriati hasn't struggled in singles so far at the French Open, but she certainly has in doubles now. She and Ai Sugiyama, seeded 14th, were pushed to the limits by Asa Carlsson and Magdalena Maleeva, who must have only just missed out on a seeding position themselves. Jennifer and Ai eventually won 5-7 6-4 6-4 to reach the third round, where they face 4th-seeds Kimberly Po and Nathalie Tauziat or Bianka Lamade and Patty Schnyder. Jelena Dokic has become the latest seeded player to fall in the heavily depleted bottom half of the draw, where Kim Clijsters and Justine Henin must be praying they make it through to a semi-final showdown. EuroSport viewers will be pleased to know that Jennifer Capriati against Mirjana Lucic is the first match of their live coverage tomorrow morning.
