Jennifer Capriati: Archived News 1999

31st December 1999 (Hong Kong Exhibition)

Lindsay Davenport has withdrawn from next week's Hong Kong Exhibition with a chest infection. Jennifer Capriati will now play Chanda Rubin of the United States (WTA #22) in singles, and presumably, Rubin (WTA #22: Doubles) and Mary Joe Fernandez in doubles. Happy Millennium!

28th December 1999 (Award)

This website has won the MMSeekers.com Creative Award. Just thought I would explain what the new icon is that has appeared on the Main Page as people have asked! Happy Millennium Capriati fans!?!

21st December 1999 (Hong Kong Exhibition/Fila Endorsement)

Jennifer Capriati will face 2nd-seed Lindsay Davenport of the United States (WTA #2) in the Quarter Finals of the eight-player Millennium Cup exhibition in Hong Kong from the 5th-8th January 2000. They will play on the 6th January. In doubles, playing with young Russian sensation Lina Krasnoroutskaya (WTA #234: Doubles), she will face 2nd-seeds Lindsay Davenport (WTA #4: Doubles) and Mary Joe Fernandez (WTA #26: Doubles) of the United States in the Semi-Finals of the four-team draw. Tough matches, both of them! Full draw at the Jennifer Capriati WebBoard. Also, look here for news on Fila's multi-year endorsement of Jennifer! Excellent news!

20th December 1999 (Jennifer Capriati WebBoard)

Okay Jennifer Capriati fans, and fans of this site... I want you all out in support of the Jennifer Capriati WebBoard, which was born today. Use it and don't abuse it!?!

17th December 1999 (Miscellaneous)

Good article about Jennifer Capriati at SportsJones, the Daily Online Sports Magazine. I also must warn you that Actfit.com, my sponsors have said that they are suspending my site because my link to their site is not working. As far as I can see it is, but if the site disappears that is why!

15th December 1999 (Playboy/Doubles 2000/Awards)

Jennifer Capriati is in the new edition of Playboy magazine! I kid you not! Don't get too excited though - it is just a typically cheeky female tennis player shot as the wind catches a players skirt and lifts it sky high!?! Keep an eye out on the Future Events section of the site for Jennifer's upcoming plans. Also, in the December issue of Italian Tennis Magazine it has been announced that Jennifer Capriati and Anke Huber have teamed up to play doubles in 2000. Nice to see a commitment to doubles from Jennifer. Also, Jennifer Capriati has won the Comeback Player of the Year Award at the 1999 Baggie Awards, the awards given by Sports Illustrated's Jon Wertheim at the CNN-SI Tennis Mailbag. Well done Jenn!

6th December 1999 (Exhibitions)

Jennifer Capriati has not participated in any exhibition matches or tournaments since finishing the WTA year at Philadelphia. The results I posted here were forwarded to me by a 'faker' (pronounce that how you will!?!) from the WTA Message Boards. Sorry if anyone got too excited about the results... I know I did!

22nd November 1999 (WTA Rankings)

With Jana Novotna's name removed from the rankings this week, Jennifer Capriati moves up one place to end the year at #23, the best-ever ranking she has achieved since her 1996 comeback. Congratulations Jen!

15th November 1999 (WTA Rankings)

Congratulations to Jennifer Capriati who moves up two places in the latest WTA Rankings to 24th, equalling her best-ever ranking since her 1996 comeback, first achieved in November 1996. A Top 20 placing must only be a few months away now.

11th November 1999 (Philadelphia)

Despite trailing 2-5 in the final set Nathalie Tauziat finally figured out how to beat Jennifer Capriati for the first time in six meetings, beating her 6-4 3-6 7-5 in the second round at Philadelphia. In press interviews afterwards Jennifer commented that a bad line call in Tauziat's favour when she led 5-2 in the final set distracted her and boosted Tauziat's play. Nevertheless, Jennifer has clocked up two WTA titles this year and will finish the year well inside the Top 30.

10th November 1999 (Philadelphia/WTA Rankings/Chase Championships)

Jennifer Capriati has defeated Belgian youngster Kim Clijsters (WTA #47) 7-5 6-3 in the first round at Philadelphia, her 300th WTA main draw singles match, just days after winning her 8th WTA singles title at Quebec. Next up for Jennifer is 4th-seed Nathalie Tauziat of France (WTA #7), herself fresh from a WTA title last week in Moscow. Capriati and Tauziat have met on five occasions, with Capriati the winner each time. Three of those meetings have been this year. The WTA have also finally published the rankings for this week and they confirm that Jennifer has moved up four places to #26 in the latest singles rankings, her highest ranking since July 1997. Also, don't get too excited, but Jennifer Capriati is one of four players who could take the 16th slot in next week's Chase Championships depending on how this week's Philadelphia tournament shapes up. I think Jennifer would need a semi-final win over Hingis to qualify!

8th November 1999 (Steven Capriati)

Jennifer's younger brother Steven has been playing tennis for the University of South Florida again. At the ITA Men's Southern Region Championships at the University of Georgia last week he reached the second round in singles, and the quarter-finals in doubles with Fabio Tintori. Capriati and Tintori are the 43rd-ranked team on the current ITA (Intercollegiate Tennis Association) Pre-Season Rankings.

7th November 1999 (Quebec)

WOO HOO!!! WTA SINGLES TITLE NO.8
Jennifer Capriati has defeated Chanda Rubin of the United States 4-6 6-1 6-2 to win her 8th career WTA title at Quebec. Jennifer broke for a 2-0 lead immediately in the first set, but then promptly lost the next four games to trail 2-4. Though she picked up a little to get back to 4-4 it was Rubin who kept in control to take the first set 6-4. After that though, there was no stopping Jennifer, as she raced through the next two sets 6-1 6-2. Quebec will probably hold some of Jennifer's best memories of 1999, if not her career. Earlier in the week the tournament organisers presented her with a statue to reward her for her dedication and courage over the last two years after being away from the game for so long, and now they have presented her with the winner's trophy. It couldn't have happened to a nicer girl! Best wishes from all your fans Jen! You've done us all proud.

6th November 1999 (Quebec)

Woo hoo!!! Jennifer Capriati recovered from a final set lead of 4-1 being whittled away to 5-5 to grind out a 2-6 6-0 7-5 win over 2nd-seed Amy Frazier and advance to the final in Quebec. It is her 14th WTA career final, and she will have a chance to win her 8th WTA career title when she takes on 3rd-seed Chanda Rubin of the United States (WTA #27) in the final. The two last met in the final of the Mahwah exhibition in July, when Capriati won 6-1 3-6 6-2.

6th November 1999 (Quebec/Philadelphia)

Jennifer Capriati soared past Lisa Raymond 6-4 6-2 in the Quebec quarterfinals to set up a semi-showdown with 2nd-seed Amy Frazier of the United States (WTA #20). Another match to look forward to for Jennifer is her first round match at Philadelphia next week, where she has been drawn against one of the WTA's hottest youngsters, wildcard entry Kim Clijsters of Belgium (WTA #45). The winner of that match will play one of Jennifer's favourite Top 10 opponents, Nathalie Tauziat.

4th November 1999 (Quebec)

The organisers of Quebec have presented Jennifer Capriati with a commemorative stone sculpture in recognition for the courage and dedication she has shown over the past two years. Tournament Director, Jacques Herisset relayed the following statement: "The organisation of the Bell Challenge thought that Jennifer Capriati is an example for the youth. What she has accomplished in the last two years should be brought forward and pointed out. Some athletes have had difficulties in their careers but few have been able to develop the pleasure of competing while discovering a new lease on life through their sport." What a beautiful gesture, three cheers for Jennifer and for the Quebec tournament organisers!

4th November 1999 (Quebec)

Another easy win for Jennifer Capriati, as she swept aside Seda Noorlander of the Netherlands 6-4 6-2 to progress to the quarter-finals at Quebec. There she will meet 6th-seed Lisa Raymond of the United States (WTA #33), who swept past Jana Nejedly 6-0 6-1 in their second round match. Capriati and Raymond last met in July at an exhibition event in the USA, with Raymond winning 7-5 7-5, her first win over Capriati in four meetings. Despite the good form Jennifer has shown throughout the year this is only her second WTA quarterfinal appearance of the year (but is her 44th overall!). The first was Strasbourg in May, where she went on to win the title.

3rd November 1999 (Quebec)

Jennifer Capriati will face her Wimbledon 1999 conqueror Seda Noorlander of the Netherlands (WTA #93) in the second round at Quebec. Noorlander needed three sets to see off Meghann Shaugnessy in the first round. This will be the fourth meeting between Capriati and Noorlander (all of them occurring in second round matches!), and Capriati currently has a 2:1 win:loss lead.

2nd November 1999 (Quebec)

Jennifer Capriati had few problems in her first round match at Quebec, defeating Jane Chi of the United States (WTA #105) 6-1 6-4. That means she has successfully defended her points from last year, when she lost in the second round to Sandrine Testud on a third set tiebreaker. Next up, either Seda Noorlander of the Netherlands or Meghann Shaugnessy of the United States.

1st November 1999 (Quebec)

Jennifer Capriati is not playing doubles at Quebec, and is likely to play her first round singles match tomorrow. In the latest WTA singles rankings, Jennifer has slipped one to 30th, while her Quebec opponent Jane Chi has fallen over thirty places out of the Top 100.

31st October 1999 (Quebec)

Jennifer Capriati is confirmed as the 4th-seed at Quebec, and will take on Jane Chi of the United States (WTA #72) in the first round. The winner of that match will face either Seda Noorlander or Meghann Shaugnassy.

26th October 1999 (Fila)

Fila have confirmed to me what we all already guessed, that Jennifer Capriati is currently endorsing their products. Jennifer's next event is Quebec, held next week, where she is likely to be seeded 5th or 6th.

22nd October 1999 (US Open)

Sorry for the delay on this, but there are now nineteen pictures from the US Open and Filderstadt up in the pictures section...not very good quality though, sorry!

17th October 1999 (Quebec)

Jennifer Capriati takes to the front page on the official Quebec website! Check it out here.

12th October 1999 (Quebec)

Jennifer Capriati has pulled out of next week's Moscow event, where she was on the WTA commitments list for the qualifying draw, and has instead chosen to defend her 1998 second round points at Quebec, week beginning 1st November.

11th October 1999 (WTA Rankings)

Jennifer Capriati's exploits at Filderstadt have edged her up one more place in the latest WTA Rankings to a new 1999 high of 29th. The gap between the players in the Top 30 is incredibly wide, but Jennifer is within sight of her comeback high of 24th, which she reached in November 1996.

10th October 1999 (Zurich)

Playing on a Sunday, Jennifer Capriati lost a titanic first round match at Zurich to 6th-seed Julie Halard-Decugis of France (WTA #9), 6-7 (5-7) 6-4 5-7. Though Jennifer fought back from 2-4 down in the final set, she lost her serve to love at the crucial stage, when serving at 5-6 down. Nevertheless, a great performance against a Top 10 player, and only her second first round loss of the year. Shame she couldn't have chalked up some valuable ranking points though.

7th October 1999 (Zurich)

Jennifer Capriati has also been given a wildcard for next week's Zurich event. The draw has already been made and she will face 6th-seed Julie Halard-Decugis of France (WTA #9) in the first round, with a chance to play either Anke Huber or Natasha Zvereva in the second round. Tough draw, but Jennifer has a 3:0 win:loss record against Halard-Decugis (although their last meeting was way back in 1991!).

6th October 1999 (Filderstadt)

Martina Hingis swept past Jennifer Capriati 6-4 6-0 in the second round at Filderstadt. Nevertheless, Jennifer's first round win over Irina Spirlea should nudge her up to 29th in next week's WTA rankings.

5th October 1999 (Filderstadt)

Under the watchful eye of next opponent Martina Hingis (WTA #1), Jennifer Capriati justified her wildcard by defeating Irina Spirlea of Romania (WTA #19) in the first round at Filderstadt, 6-4 6-1. Sadly the day also brought the end of Jana Novotna's career with a disappointing first round loss to Silvia Farina. Hope you enjoy your retirement, Jana! Jennifer is not playing doubles at Filderstadt.

3rd October 1999 (Filderstadt)

Jennifer Capriati, a wildcard entry, takes on Irina Spirlea of Romania (WTA #19) in the first round at Filderstadt on Tuesday. The winner will face World #1 Martina Hingis in the second round.

23rd September 1999 (Filderstadt)

Jennifer Capriati has been given a main draw wildcard for Filderstadt, week beginning 4th October. The tournament will also mark the last stop of Jana Novotna's professional career, leaving Jennifer a possible last chance to clock up her first win over the Czech former Wimbledon winner.

20th September 1999 (Toyko)

Jennifer Capriati has withdrawn from the WTA event in Tokyo with a foot injury. Hope it's nothing too serious. Jennifer's next scheduled stop is Filderstadt, week beginning 4th October.

14th September 1999 (WTA Rankings)

Jennifer Capriati's run at the US Open has catapulted her ranking upwards another ten places to 30th, putting her back in the Top 30 for the first time in a very long time. Way to go, Jen. As far as I know, her next tournament will be Tokyo next week. Also, I am still having no end of problems with e-mail and the website guestbook, so please bear with me while I try and sort these problems out!

7th September 1999 (US Open)

Jennifer's statement has certainly struck a chord with you all. I have received over 100 e-mails in support of Jennifer in the last 24 hours, and around forty people have signed the WebSite Guestbook in that time. As a result the Guestbook seems to be having some problems and is not showing all the recent Guestbook entries. Hopefully this won't last too long, but please note that I have e-mail copies of all Guestbook entries, and will be printing these off to send to Jennifer if the Guestbook is not fixed by the end of the week. I have contacted the WTA and asked them to tell Jennifer about the support she is getting via the WebSite, and will be sending all your e-mails and letters of support to her. Keep them coming! In view of all the requests of a fanmail address for Jennifer, I have put a list of contact addresses up on the site.

6th September 1999 (US Open)

It has been noticeable recently that Jennifer Capriati has been unhappy with persistant questioning about her past. Following her US Open loss to Monica Seles today, Jennifer read an already-prepared statement to the media. It obviously took a great deal of courage to write, and more courage to read. Jennifer Capriati is a stunning tennis player, and a lovely person, and this year in particular she has shown that she has a very strong future on the WTA Tennis Tour. Let's respect Jennifer's wishes and look to the future!

6th September 1999 (US Open)

Jennifer Capriati put up a valiant fight against Monica Seles, but the World #4 proved too strong, winning 6-4 6-3. Seles broke early in each set, and though Jennifer managed to break back she still dropped her serve again once more at the end of each set, giving Seles crucial breaks to take the first set 6-4, and lead 5-3 in the second set. Nevertheless, Jennifer's second trip of the year to a Grand Slam fourth round will see her ranking rise another ten places to 30th. Not bad considering she was ranked 99th in the first rankings of the year. Jennifer's next scheduled event is Tokyo, beginning 20th September, where she has direct entry into the main draw.

4th September 1999 (US Open)

Jennifer Capriati had time for a sleep in the second set (!?!) before winning her fifth career meeting in five meetings with 11th-seed Nathalie Tauziat of France (WTA #9), 6-3 1-6 6-1. All looked lost as Capriati's 5-0 first set lead faltered, then Tauziat rushed her way through the second set. Capriati got her act together in the final set though, taking it 6-1, and for the second time this year moves into the fourth round of a Grand Slam event. There she will face 4th-seed Monica Seles of the United States (WTA #4). Jennifer's win over Tauziat is her third 1999 win over a Top 10 player.

2nd September 1999 (US Open)

Jennifer Capriati came through her second three set struggle in as many days, defeating Seda Noorlander 5-7 6-1 6-4 in the US Open second round. Like in her first round match with Iva Majoli a substantial lead was whittled away before victory came. Jennifer led 4-1 in the final set before Noorlander battled her way back. But thankfully Jennifer regained her composure and served out for the match at 5-4. In the third round she will face 11th-seed Nathalie Tauziat of France (WTA #9), whom she has already beaten twice this year! Tauziat also needed three sets to win her second round match, defeating Maria Antonia Sanchez Lorenzo 7-5 4-6 6-1. A little piece of trivia: Jennifer's win over Seda Noorlander is the 200th WTA main draw win of her career.

2nd September 1999 (US Open)

Jennifer Capriati and Mirjana Lucic must be hugely disappointed by their first round doubles loss to Catalina Cristea and Ruxandra Dragomir. They lost 7-6 (7-4) 6-7 (5-7) 6-7 (7-9) in surely the closest match of the tournament so far. It was Jennifer's second consecutive doubles loss to Cristea and Dragomir, as she and Iva Majoli lost to them at Amelia Island in April in her last doubles match.

1st September 1999 (US Open)

Jennifer Capriati and Mirjana Lucic play their first round doubles match against Catalina Cristea and Ruxandra Dragomir later today. The mixed doubles draw has been announced, and Jennifer is not in it. A point worth noting is that Jennifer's first round win over Iva Majoli was her first US Open win since 1992. She did not play in 1994 and 1995, and lost in the first round in 1993, 1996, 1997 and 1998.

31st August 1999 (US Open)

Jennifer Capriati has defeated Iva Majoli 6-1 7-5 in the US Open first round. It all seemed to be going Jennifer's way as she served for the match at 6-1 5-2, but the pressure of beating her best friend seemed to get to her, as she faltered badly and allowed Majoli to pull back to 5-5. After breaking Majoli for 6-5 though, Jennifer then served for the match for the third time, this time successfully. In the second round she will meet another familiar face: Seda Noorlander of the Netherlands (WTA #93). It was Noorlander who beat her in the second round at Wimbledon. Noorlander beat Laura Golarsa of Italy 6-2 6-1 in their first round match.

30th August 1999 (US Open)

Jennifer Capriati is indeed playing doubles at the US Open with Mirjana Lucic of Croatia. They are a wildcard entry, and in the first round face Catalina Cristea and Ruxandra Dragomir of Romania. Also, check out the Jennifer Capriati FanClub. I haven't had a chance to yet, so let me know what it is!

26th August 1999 (US Open)

It is possible that Jennifer Capriati will be playing doubles with Mirjana Lucic of Croatia at the US Open, but don't quote me on that! Also, Jennifer appears to have signed my Guestbook... is this a hoax or is it for real?! Either way, best wishes Jennifer for the US Open!

25th August 1999 (US Open)

Jennifer Capriati faces former Grand Slam winner and sometime doubles partner Iva Majoli of Croatia (WTA #99) in the first round of the US Open. Potential opponents include Wimbledon conqueror Seda Noorlander in the second round; Nathalie Tauziat or Alexandra Stevenson in the third round; Monica Seles in the last-16; and World No.1 Martina Hingis in the quarterfinals.

23rd August 1999 (WTA Rankings/Jennifer Capriati Poetry Competition)

This week Jennifer Capriati moves up to a new 1999 high of 40th in the latest WTA singles rankings. There has been very limited interest in the Jennifer Capriati Poetry Competition. Please take the time to fill out my Poetry Poll, as I am keen to know why. Thanks.

19th August 1999 (Toronto)

9th-seed Barbara Schett of Austria (WTA #16) has defeated Jennifer Capriati 6-3 6-2 in the third round at Toronto.

18th August 1999 (Toronto)

It was a little more difficult than last time, but Jennifer has made it 4:0 in career meetings with Nathalie Tauziat of France (WTA #12), defeating her 1-6 6-4 6-2 in the second round at Toronto. It was her 300th career WTA match, and her eighth win over a Top 30 ranked player this year. In the third round, Jennifer will face 9th-seed Barbara Schett of Austria (WTA #16). Schett is the only player to hand Jennifer a 1999 first round defeat. In contrast, by this time last year Jennifer had suffered six first round losses. There are more pictures from Toronto here. Also, in the post-match interview Jennifer stated that she was not playing at New Haven next week, but was instead training for the forthcoming US Open.

18th August 1999 (Jennifer Capriati WebSite)

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO ME!!! The website that is, not me personally!?! Yes, it is exactly one year since the Jennifer Capriati WebSite went online, and since then I have had over 31,500 hits on the site, and together we have witnessed Jennifer win her first WTA title since January 1993, and post her best Grand Slam finish since Wimbledon 1993. We've seen her sign-up with new coach Harold Solomon and watched as his influence helped her win matches and gain confidence and belief. Here's to another year, and I hope you are all appreciating the site, I know my telephone company are!?!

16th August 1999 (Toronto)

Jennifer Capriati defeated Angeles Montolio of Spain (WTA #69) 6-1 6-3 in the first round at Toronto. Montolio was a lucky loser from the qualifying draw, given a main draw position after 11th-seed Julie Halard-Decugis withdrew injured. Amy Frazier, who was to have been Capriati's first round opponent, was promoted to 17th-seed and given Halard-Decugis' place in the draw. Capriati will face 7th-seed Nathalie Tauziat of France (WTA #10) in the second round. It will be the 300th WTA match of Capriati's career. When she last met Tauziat, in Strasbourg in May, Capriati defeated her 6-0 6-1. Jennifer is not playing doubles at Toronto. Pictures from Toronto here.

15th August 1999 (Toronto)

Jennifer Capriati will take on Amy Frazier of the United States (WTA #24) in the first round at Toronto, and the winner will face 7th-seed Nathalie Tauziat of France (WTA #10) in the second round. Incidentally, Jennifer Capriati and Amy Frazier are the last two players to face Steffi Graf in her tournament career, Capriati at Mahwah, and Frazier at San Diego.

14th August 1999 (Toronto)

Jennifer Capriati and another WTA player yet to be announced will participate in a demonstration that will profile Hoover vacuum cleaners tomorrow in Toronto! The two players will face each other in a friendly competition where they will race to transfer tennis balls from one bucket to another using Hoover vacuums!?!

13th August 1999 (Jennifer Capriati Video/Steffi Graf)

For Sale: Jennifer Capriati video 'The Making of a Champion', narrated by Billie Jean King, and featuring contributions from Stefano and Denise Capriati, Chris Evert and Jennifer herself. The 30-minute video charts Jennifer's career from the age of three until her first few months on the WTA Tour in 1990. I have one copy only for sale. Let the bidding begin! E-mail me at mark.newman@bigfoot.com with a price you are willing to pay (please remember postage and packing costs, particularly if you are outside the UK), and I will sell it to the highest bidder on 20th August. Please let me know if you want to be notified each time your bid is bettered! Good luck. Also, best of luck to Steffi Graf in her career outside tennis, after she announced her immediate retirement from the sport today. The world of women's tennis will not be the same without her. She was a class act.

11th August 1999 (Miscellaneous)

Corina Morariu's brother has written to CNN-SI, complaining that Morariu, who has never been in trouble with the police, receives less attention than Capriati. A dismissive answer suggested that that was more to do with the fact that Morariu had not won six titles and reached three Grand Slam semi-finals and six Grand Slam quarterfinals by the age of 18!!! After much delay (sorry!) I have completed Jennifer's year-by-year biography here. It's not as totally comprehensive as I would like, and I will be adding to it more when I have more time, so keep checking! The Jennifer Capriati Poetry Competition is still open for entries until August 31st, so get writing!

8th August 1999 (Los Angeles)

Although Jennifer is on the WTA commitments lists for qualifying at the Acura Classic in Los Angeles next week, she is not playing there. The main draw wildcards have gone to Alexandra Stevenson, Iva Majoli and Corina Morariu.

3rd August 1999 (Competition/Fanmail)

Get your thinking hats on and show off your literary talent for the 1999 Jennifer Capriati Poetry Competition. Entries should be in by 31st August 1999. Also, I have news on where to send fanmail to Jennifer.

2nd August 1999 (San Diego)

Although she was on the WTA commitments lists for qualifying at San Diego, Jennifer Capriati does not appear to be playing either the main or qualifying draw. She will therefore lose her points from defeating three Top 100 players in the qualifying draw last year.

30th July 1999 (Stanford)

Jennifer Capriati crashed out in the second round at Stanford, beaten 5-7 2-6 by Corina Morariu, who also beat her at Stanford last year.

28th July 1999 (Stanford)

Jennifer Capriati held on to defeat 9th-seed Conchita Martinez of Spain 5-7 6-4 6-4 in the first round at Stanford. She now faces Corina Morariu of the United States (WTA #42) in the second round. Morariu beat her here last year in the first round.

27th July 1999 (Jennifer Capriati WebSite)

I have now added Jennifer Capriati's career win-loss records in women's doubles and mixed doubles. You can check her win-loss record against an opponent, or with her doubles partner. Check them out here. Jennifer plays Conchita Martinez in the first round at Stanford tonight.

26th July 1999 (Stanford)

Well, Michael Danner strikes again! He met with Denise Capriati, Jennifer's Mom, and got some good info. Jennifer will probably only play at Montreal before the US Open following her appearance in Stanford. She and Iva Majoli wanted to continue their doubles partnership there, but could not get into the event because their rankings were too low. Jennifer has also got herself a new fitness trainer, and has been hitting with Martina Hingis. Thanks to Michael for the news.

26th July 1999 (Stanford)

The withdrawal of Monica Seles from Stanford has created a reshuffle in the draw, which has not benefited Jennifer Capriati at all. 5th-seed Barbara Schett, who was to have been her opponent, now has a first round bye, and Jennifer will instead face Conchita Martinez of Spain (WTA #18), who becomes the 9th seed. The winner will now face either Corina Morariu of the United States or a lucky loser from the qualifying draw.

25th July 1999 (CNN-SI)

I think we should give in at CNN-SI. Voting that Jennifer Capriati will never again reach the Top 10 is now a whopping 45 votes ahead with 43% (675 votes) of the 1561 votes. Next Year is second with 40% (630 votes) and This Year trails in third place with 16% (256 votes). The one consolation is that 56% of people think that Jennifer will make the Top 10 in the next seventeen months, compared to 43% who think she will never reach the Top 10 again!

24th July 1999 (Stanford)

Jennifer will face 5th-seed Barbara Schett of Austria (WTA #12) in the first round at Stanford. Schett provided Capriati with her only 1999 first round loss so far at Hannover in February. The winner will face either Conchita Martinez or Corina Morariu in the second round, with top seed Lindsay Davenport waiting in the round after that. Keep voting at CNN-SI. 'Never' still leads the way, 20 votes ahead of 'Next Year'. You Capriati fans aren't voting hard enough!?!

22nd July 1999 (Stanford)

Thanks to tennis detective Michael Danner (!!!), I now know that Jennifer will get direct entry into the WTA event in Stanford next week. She had said that she would only play if she could get into the main draw. Keep voting at CNN-SI. 'Never' and 'Next Year' are now tied at 47%. Keep voting for 'Next Year' and push that ahead!

20th July 1999 (Miscellaneous)

There is a vote at CNN-SI at the moment on whether Jennifer Capriati will get back into the Top 10. The answers are 'This Year', 'Next Year' or 'Never'. So far 'never' leads the way with 47% of the vote, while 39% say 'Next Year' and just 14% say 'This Year'. So, Jennifer fans, get your voting shoes on and get rid of that embarrassing 'Never'!

19th July 1999 (Mahwah)

Jennifer Capriati won her second title of the year, with a 6-1 3-6 6-2 win over Chanda Rubin in the final of the A&P Tennis Classic in Mahwah, New Jersey. Below, Jennifer checks her name on the trophy from 1991 and 1993! More pictures here.

18th July 1999 (Mahwah)

Jennifer Capriati defeated Erika De Lone of the United States (WTA #128) 7-5 6-2 to advance to her fifth Mahwah final in as many appearances. There she will meet Chanda Rubin of the United States (WTA #24).

16th July 1999 (Mahwah)

Steffi Graf blew three match points at 7-5 5-3, and two more at 7-5 6-5, against Jennifer Capriati in the quarterfinals of the A&P Tennis Classic in Mahwah and, struggling with bronchitis, was eventually forced to retire with Capriati leading 5-7 7-6 (7-3) 1-0. It may not be a nice way to gain only her second career win in thirteen meetings with Steffi Graf, but Capriati can gain comfort from the fact that she saved those match points, and held her nerve enough to force a third set. Pictures from the match here. In the semi-finals Capriati will play the winner of the Mahwah USTA Challenger final between Erika De Lone of the United States (WTA #128) and Nicole Pratt of Australia (WTA #81). Capriati has a 1-0 win-loss record over them both. I will be away all weekend, and therefore unable to update the page again until Sunday night/Monday morning UK time. I have found this page a useful link for news on the A&P Tennis Classic. Good luck Jennifer!

13th July 1999 (Winston-Salem)

Many thanks to John Idol for alerting me to the fact that Jennifer Capriati played an exhibition event in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, USA last week. She was a last-minute replacement for an injured Jana Novotna into the 13th Flows Motors Tennis Invitational, and was seeded 2nd. She received a bye in the quarterfinals, defeated Candice Fuchs of the United States (WTA #773) 7-6 (7-3) 6-2 in the semi-finals, and lost 5-7 5-7 to top seed Lisa Raymond of the United States (WTA #30) in the final.

12th July 1999 (Mahwah)

By playing in Mahwah this week instead of defending her Palermo points from last year Jennifer will drop 34 points from her ranking total next week. This should only put her down a few places to about 47th though.

11th July 1999 (Mahwah)

The 8-player A&P Tennis Classic exhibition event in Mahwah, New Jersey was always going to provide Jennifer Capriati with a tough first match, and indeed it has. On Thursday, Jennifer will face top seed Steffi Graf of Germany (WTA #3) in their quarterfinal match. With Graf edging ever nearer to retirement, this 13th-career meeting could be their last. Perhaps Jennifer can gain only her second ever win over Steffi. Anna Kournikova, Jana Novotna and Amanda Coetzer are also taking part in the four-day exhibition event. Jennifer has a packed schedule after Mahwah. She will take the following week off before embarking on a seven-week run of WTA tournaments. See Future Events section for further details. It is worth noting that this time last year Jennifer reached the quarterfinals at the WTA event in Palermo, so her ranking will suffer in a couple of weeks as those points drop off. However, with seven weeks on the WTA Tour, Jennifer has plenty of time to get those points back, and then hopefully add some more!

4th July 1999 (Steven Capriati)

Jennifer's younger brother Steven Capriati has gone back onto the ATP Tour during his vacation from the University of South Florida. As a wildcard into the qualifying at this week's Newport tournament, he defeated David McNamara of the United States (ATP #607) in the first round 7-6 (7-1) 6-4, before falling to 2nd-seed Jonathan Stark of the United States (ATP #305) in the second round of qualifying, 3-6 2-6. As far as I am aware, this is only Steven's second ATP event.

23rd June 1999 (Wimbledon)

Jennifer Capriati has been dumped out of Wimbledon by a qualifier ranked outside the Top 100. Seda Noorlander of the Netherlands (WTA #126) defeated Capriati out on Court 18 with a scoreline of 6-1 6-3, a crushing blow for Jennifer after her fine first round win over Anke Huber. At least she got further than Martina Hingis. Incidentally, Seda Noorlander was the first person to hand Martina Hingis a defeat at the beginning of her professional career. Vote at the Poll Page.

22nd June 1999 (Wimbledon)

Jennifer Capriati and Anke Huber resumed their match on Centre Court at 5-5 in the final set. Jennifer immediately dropped her serve, but Huber fared no better and the two women carried on their tremendous play from yesterday. Capriati was first to hold serve for 8-7, and didn't need to convert her first match point on Huber's serve when the German double faulted. My nerves are in tatters after watching the match over the past two days. Capriati's second round opponent is Seda Noorlander of the Netherlands. Big cheers too for another of my faves, Jelena Dokic. She crushed Martina Hingis 6-2 6-0 in their first round match. Unbelievable.

21st June 1999 (Wimbledon)

Jennifer Capriati and Anke Huber will have to resume their epic match tomorrow after play was suspended due to bad light with the score at 5-7 6-3 5-5. Capriati struggled to hold her serve at 4-4 in the final set, with the game going to an incredible twelve deuces, but hold her serve she did. With the tournament referee at the edge of the court, Capriati missed the chance to close out the match by breaking the Huber serve, and the match will resume again tomorrow. The match was a last minute addition to the Centre Court schedule, and Capriati and Huber certainly gave the spectators a wonderful match to watch, with both players in tremendous form. Pictures from the match are here.

21st June 1999 (Wimbledon)

Jennifer Capriati's first round match with Anke Huber is the fourth match on Court 3 today. Get up-to-the-minute Capriati results via the Jennifer Capriati Mailing List. E-mail me at mark.newman@bigfoot.com if you want to go on the list. At the Poll Page, the general consensus at the moment is that Jennifer will reach the Quarter Finals, though Anke Huber may have something to say about that!

16th June 1999 (Wimbledon)

Anke Huber, who will be Jennifer Capriati's first round opponent at Wimbledon next week, has crashed out in the second round at 's-Hertogenbosch to Magdalena Maleeva, herself coming back from injury, 2-6 2-6. The result follows a tough three set first round win over Joanette Kruger. This news should give Jennifer hope for next week, as Huber will arrive at Wimbledon desperately short of match practice. The women's doubles draw has been announced, and Jennifer is not participating.

15th June 1999 (Wimbledon)

Jennifer Capriati faces a tough first round clash at Wimbledon against Anke Huber of Germany (WTA #30), who is making her comeback from injury. Nathalie Tauziat, a grass-court specialist, stands as a potential third round opponent, and though Jennifer beat her to the loss of just one game at Strasbourg, the French woman will be harder to beat on grass. Anke Huber has a 1999 win-loss record of 9-9, and has reached only one quarterfinal all year, at Hope Island in January where she lost to Irina Spirlea. She is playing at 's-Hertogenbosch this week, her first event since Berlin in early May. Vote for how far you think Jennifer will get at Wimbledon at the Poll Page. Also, note that with the withdrawal of Amelie Mauresmo of France through injury, Jennifer Capriati was lifted into the main draw by right, and has not used her wildcard.

14th June 1999 (Mahwah)

I would be really grateful if somebody could ring the A&P Tennis Classic in Mahwah box office on 201-825-9100 and get a contact postal address or e-mail address for me to find the missing Mahwah results from my Capriati singles results. I'm missing her second round opponent and score from 1990 and her semi-final score and opponent from 1991. Thank-you!!!

8th June 1999 (Wimbledon)

Jennifer Capriati has been awarded a main draw wildcard for Wimbledon. Despite being ranked 41st this week, she was ranked outside the Top 100 when the cut-off date occurred. She would have been the top seed in qualifying.

8th June 1999 (WTA Tour "Hoover Mover" Award)

Jennifer Capriati has been awarded the monthly WTA Tour "Hoover Mover" Award for the month of May. The award is given to the Top 100 player who has climbed the furthest over the previous month. Capriati began the month of May ranked 115th, improving to 53rd after winning Strasbourg. Capriati will be presented with a gift certificate to redeem on Hoover products for her efforts. She also stands a good chance of winning the year-end award that Hoover will present to the player who makes the greatest strides in the Top 100 for the year. Capriati began the year ranked 100th. American Serena Williams won the first-ever WTA Tour "Hoover Mover" Award in March, and Canadian Maureen Drake won the award in April.

7th June 1999 (WTA Rankings)

Jennifer's fourth round appearance at the French Open sends her another twelve places up the WTA Rankings to 41st. It is her first appearance inside the Top 50 since the last week of October 1997. The general consensus at the Poll Page is that Jennifer will be ranked between 11th and 20th by the end of the year.

5th June 1999 (French Open)

Totally un-Capriati related, but a million cheers and rounds of applause for Steffi Graf, who has won her 22nd Grand Slam title by defeating Martina Hingis in three sets in the French Open final. Graf made the World No.1 look like a spoilt little kid (crossing court to question a call, serving underarm twice - both times at match point down), and Hingis was left crying on her mother's shoulder. Full credit to the pair of them though for creating one of the best tennis matches I've seen in a long time.

1st June 1999 (Poll Page)

Something new for you to vote on at the Poll Page. In the last vote on where Jennifer would get at the French Open, the top answer was the correct one. 28% of the 127 of you who voted went for the fourth round as Jennifer's French Open 1999 departing point, and indeed it was!

30th May 1999 (French Open)

Jennifer Capriati has lost her French Open fourth round match with World No.2 and 2nd-seed Lindsay Davenport. Davenport won 6-2 6-3. A great performance from Jennifer this week though, and it will put her back comfortably inside the Top 50 for the first time since October 1997. I now have fourteen pictures of Jennifer at the French Open.

29th May 1999 (French Open)

Jennifer Capriati was leading Silvia Farina of Italy (WTA #24) 6-2 4-0 when the Italian was forced to withdraw with a thigh injury. Jennifer was apparently in devastating form though, and moves into the fourth round of a Grand Slam for the first time since 1993 and will face World No.2 Lindsay Davenport of the United States there tomorrow. 30% of the 120 people who have voted at my Poll Page! have voted the fourth round as the most likely place for Jennifer to lose at the French Open, so we will see tomorrow. Remember in career meetings they are tied at 1:1. For details, remember to check Jennifer's Player Win-Loss Records.

27th May 1999 (French Open)

Oh my God! What kind of match was that! My nerve's are shot to pieces! In a match of endless breaks of serve, Jennifer Capriati let a 6-3 3-1 lead slip away, before clawing back to defeat Lilia Osterloh of the United States 6-3 3-6 6-2. It is the first time Jennifer has reached the third round of a Grand Slam since Wimbledon 1993. She will next face Silvia Farina of Italy (WTA #24) in the third round, a three set winner over Ai Sugiyama, 11-9 in the third set, earlier today. The French Open mixed doubles draw has finally been announced and, as expected, Jennifer is not participating.

26th May 1999 (Steven Capriati/CBS Sportsline)

Some news on Jennifer's younger brother, Steven Capriati, a former ATP player. He is currently studying at the University of South Florida, and is playing collegiate tennis for the 'Bulls', the USF team. They are currently 28th on the national rankings. The USF homepage has this to say about Steven: 'USF also received a boost from the strong play of freshman Steven Capriati. Capriati was 21-5 for the Bulls in singles.' There is a good article on him at University of Florida website. And, as if there was any doubt, Jennifer Capriati was named the CBS Sportsline Player of the Week, gaining 56.5% of the 2,008 votes cast, well ahead of Patrick Rafter in second place, with 20.6% of the vote.

25th May 1999 (French Open/Wimbledon/CBS Sportsline)

Jennifer has defeated Virginia Ruano-Pascual of Spain 6-2 6-3 in the first round of the French Open, continuing her good form from Strasbourg last week. Remember that Jennifer did not play the French Open last year, so every win will push her up the rankings. In the next round she faces Lilia Osterloh of the United States (WTA #80). No news on the mixed doubles draw yet, though Jennifer has only played mixed doubles twice in her career, so I'm not expecting her to be participating. Voting for Jennifer Capriati as Player of the Week at CBS Sportsline is going well. She is still leading with 57.1% of the 1,593 votes cast. Some distressing Wimbledon news, the cut-off date for the main draw seems to have been last week, which puts Jennifer as the top seed in the qualifying draw. It's not as bad as it seems though, because one withdrawal and she's in the main draw anyway. My French Open poll at the Poll Page! has the quarter-finals as the favourite departing place for Jennifer in Paris at the moment. Commiserations to the one person who voted for her losing in the first round! And finally, Jennifer's win over Elena Likhovtseva in the final at Strasbourg has been selected the WTA Win-of-the-Week. Oh yeah, one more thing, I've added loads more pictures in the Pictures section. Check them out!

24th May 1999 (General News/French Open)

Vote for Jennifer Capriati as Player of the Week at CBS Sportsline. She's up against Lindsay Davenport, Patrick Rafter and Marcelo Rios. When I last looked she was leading with 58.2% of the vote. Patrick Rafter was second with 19.7%!!! With 807 people having voted, that meant Jennifer had well over 400 people voting for her! Wish they all visited my site! Go Jenn! Keep filling in my French Open poll at the new Poll Page! as well. Also, Jennifer is not entered in the women's doubles draw at the French Open. On the latest Top 50 WTA Money Leaders, Jennifer appears for the first time this year at 47th with 1999 earnings of $59,054.

22nd May 1999 (Strasbourg)

CONGRATULATIONS!!! CONGRATULATIONS!!! CONGRATULATIONS!!!
Jennifer has shocked Elena Likhovtseva 6-1 6-3 to win her seventh WTA career title at Strasbourg. I, and all other Capriati fans, send our best wishes to Jennifer, who must be feeling on top of the world at the moment. We knew you could do it, Jen! The French Open is next - please fill in the French Open poll at the new Poll Page!. Jennifer's heroics push her up to 53rd in the latest WTA singles rankings.

Important News (Jennifer Capriati Biography)

Several users of www.capriati.com have contacted me suggesting that I write an up-to-date Jennifer Capriati biography. As you may or may not know, there has not been a biography of Jennifer published since 1993. I am willing to write a biography of Jennifer, and get it printed, providing there is sufficient interest. Obviously, it will not be a super-professional publication, but I would look into ways of producing a book as professionally as I can. If only a few people are interested, then it is only likely to be a small booklet, but if 100 or more are keen, then a properly produced book would be viable. If you are interested in the idea, then please e-mail me at mark.newman@bigfoot.com letting me know of your interest, and also stating a price in $US or ŁUK that you would be willing to pay for the biography. I will acknowledge your e-mail promptly, and in a fortnight or so contact you to let you know the level of response I have received, and whether the project is viable.

21st May 1999 (Strasbourg/French Open)

Jennifer Capriati continued her good form in Strasbourg by recording her 200th WTA career win over qualifier Denisa Chladkova of the Czech Republic, 6-4 7-5. She therefore reaches her 13th WTA career final (lucky for some?) where she will face 2nd-seed Elena Likhovtseva of Russia (WTA #21). The good news continued when Jennifer got a reasonable draw at the French Open. In the first round she will face Virginia Ruano-Pascual of Spain (WTA #39), and is not drawn to meet a seed until the third round, where 14th-seed Amanda Coetzer of South Africa (WTA #14) stands in her way.

20th May 1999 (Strasbourg)

OH MY GOD! I return home from work, hoping that at least Jennifer will have beaten Cara Black and...! Not only did Jennifer beat Cara Black 7-6 (7-2) 6-4, but she totally swept aside top seed Nathalie Tauziat of France (WTA #9) in the quarterfinals 6-1 6-0. Yes, 6-1 6-0!!! It's Jennifer first win over a Top 10 player since January 1997 when she beat Lindsay Davenport in Sydney. Incidentally, that was also the last time Jennifer was in a semi-final! In the Strasbourg semi's, Jennifer takes on Denisa Chladkova of the Czech Republic (WTA #95), a qualifier. Jennifer's wins over Tanasugarn, Black and Tauziat will boost her ranking to about 70th next week. Plus! The WTA credit Jennifer's victory over Nathalie Tauziat as her 200th professional career win! I, on the other hand, don't count her 1989 Wightman Cup win because it was just a tie between the USA and Great Britain, so I count it as her 199th career win! One more, Jen! Tomorrow, please!

20th May 1999 (French Open)

Iva Majoli, who would have been the most likely candidate to play doubles with Jennifer Capriati at the French Open, has withdrawn from the year's second Grand Slam with a shoulder injury. Majoli won the French Open in 1997.

19th May 1999 (Strasbourg)

Jennifer Capriati once again got caught up in a match suspension after a first set tiebreak. This time however she leads Cara Black 7-6 (7-2) in their second round match. The winner will face top seed Nathalie Tauziat in the quarterfinals.

19th May 1999 (French Open)

The French Open is certainly shaping up to be an interesting one. Not only will Jennifer fear a first round draw against any of the Top 16 seeds, she will also have to watch out for Amelie Mauresmo, Anna Kournikova and Conchita Martinez - all of whom are unseeded. Also, thanks to John Treleven at ITF and Jennifer fan Shaun Warner, I now have a full list of Jennifer's doubles results in my RESULTS section, with full names and nationalities of all opponents! Thanks guys.

18th May 1999 (Strasbourg)

Jennifer Capriati struggled through the first set against Tamarine Tanasugarn in the first round at Strasbourg, but once she had won the first set tiebreak the match was hers. Jennifer won 7-6 (8-6) 6-1 to set up a second round meeting with 6th-seed Cara Black of Zimbabwe (WTA #32).

17th May 1999 (Strasbourg)

Jennifer Capriati has not entered the doubles draw at Strasbourg. The winner of the Capriati/Tanasuagarn first round match will face Cara Black of Zimbabwe in the second round.

15th May 1999 (Strasbourg)

Jennifer Capriati has indeed been given a main draw wildcard at Strasbourg and will face Tamarine Tanasugarn of Thailand (WTA #67) in the first round. The winner will face either Cara Black of Zimbabwe (WTA #34) or Alicia Molik of Australia (WTA #94) in the last-16, with top seed Nathalie Tauziat of France (WTA #9) as a potential quarterfinal opponent.

15th May 1999 (Strasbourg)

Jennifer Capriati was to be the 7th-seed in the qualifying draw at Strasbourg, and was due to take on Maria Jose Gaidano of Argentina (WTA #238) today. However, she has been replaced in the draw, and at present I do not know if she has pulled out, or received a main draw wildcard.

14th May 1999 (Berlin)

Just a day after defeating Jennifer Capriati in the second round at Berlin, Serena Williams was forced to withdraw from her quarterfinal match against Arantxa Sanchez Vicario with an elbow injury. Now, why couldn't that have happened yesterday!?!

13th May 1999 (Jennifer Capriati WebSite)

Thanks to Caroline Smith at the WTA Tour, I now have Jennifer's full career doubles results. I would be most grateful if anyone can help me fill in the missing Christian names and nationalities!

13th May 1999 (Berlin)

Jennifer Capriati was in immediate trouble when her second round match with Serena Williams resumed today. She fell behind 0-4, and though she rebounded a little it was too late to capture the match, and Serena Williams moved on with a 7-6 (7-3) 6-3 victory. I think though we can all be proud of Jennifer, and it certainly looks like the work with Harold Solomon is paying off. Let's hope she's back next week at Strasbourg as planned, and can pull out some good results there. And a word of warning to Miss Capriati - control your temper!! Jennifer was docked a point in the first set tiebreak against Williams after using the F-word when complaining that she could no longer see the ball due to the darkness! It was obviously very disappointing to lose a 5-1 lead, and we can all understand Jennifer's outburst. You've had a good showing here, Jenn, now it's onwards and upwards.

12th May 1999 (Berlin)

It certainly looked like the work with Harold Solomon had paid off as Jennifer Capriati built up a 5-1 lead over Serena Williams in their second round match, but she let it all slip away. Serena Williams took the first set on a tiebreak, 7-3, before the match was suspended by darkness.

12th May 1999 (Berlin)

Jennifer Capriati hardly gave Amanda Hopmans a look-in in the final set of their postponed match from yesterday. She raced to a 3-0 lead and never looked back, eventually winning the match 6-4 4-6 6-1. Her match with Serena Williams is next on Court 1, following the Schnyder/Rittner match. I have updated the Singles section, so that all Jennifer's career results are on one page, along with her year-by-year and career WTA win-loss records. Check it out!

12th May 1999 (Berlin)

The match between Capriati and Hopmans will finish today as the second match on Court 2, following the Sanchez Vicario/Morariu match starting at 12pm Berlin time. Let's hope it's not a long set, as the winner takes on Serena Williams as the third match on Court 1!

11th May 1999 (Berlin)

If my German is correct (!), the first round match at Berlin between Jennifer Capriati and Amanda Hopmans appears to have been suspended due to bad light. I presume it will restart tomorrow. They had not yet begun the third set.

11th May 1999 (Berlin)

Amanda Hopmans has levelled the score in the first round at Berlin, by taking the second set 6-4.

11th May 1999 (Berlin)

Jennifer Capriati has taken the first set from Amanda Hopmans 6-4 in the first round at Berlin. The live score can be found at Berlin Open.

10th May 1999 (Berlin)

Jennifer Capriati is not playing doubles at Berlin. This is a shame, because she seemed to be more willing than usual to play doubles in previous tournaments, and it is, of course, a great way to gain match practice.

10th May 1999 (Berlin)

Jennifer Capriati will meet a lucky loser in the first round at Berlin. She will play Amanda Hopmans of the Netherlands (WTA #83), who was defeated in the final round of qualifying by Anca Barna of Germany (WTA #121). Capriati and Hopmans have not played each other before.

8th May 1999 (Berlin)

Jennifer Capriati has a nice first round match against a qualifier in Berlin to ease herself back into tournament play. However, the work she has been doing with Harold Solomon will certainly be put to the test if she reaches the second round, as her opponent there will be Serena Williams, one of the hottest players of the year.

7th May 1999 (Berlin)

Jennifer Capriati has taken a wildcard into the main draw at next week's WTA event in Berlin. It will be her first match since Amelia Island over a month ago.

3rd May 1999 (E-mail)

Please note that my e-mail address has now changed to mark.newman@bigfoot.com . Also, I should point out that any information I have on Jennifer's WTA rankings or future events is now listed in those particular sections, both of which you can find by clicking the 'NEWS' link above.

2nd May 1999 (Italian Open)

I have now seen the main and qualifying draws for the Italian Open and can confirm that Jennifer is not playing there this year.

1st May 1999 (Italian Open)

Though Jennifer Capriati is on the WTA commitments list for the Italian Open, she is not in the qualifying draw. There are four main draw wildcards, only one of which is left after the other three were given to Italian players. It seems that we may have to wait a little longer for Jennifer's return.

26th April 1999 (Hamburg)

Jennifer Capriati is not appearing in this week's WTA event in Hamburg, which means that she will lose all her points from reaching the quarterfinals last year, and plummet to around 116th next week. She is, however, expected to appear at consecutive events for the next few weeks leading up to the French Open.

15th April 1999 (Jennifer Capriati WebSite)

For your delectation (is that a word!), I now have a complete singles career player win-loss record for Jennifer Capriati on this WebSite. Link to it via the Bio section. If you notice any mistakes, please point them out, and if you know of any exhibition matches that I don't know of, then drop me a line! Enjoy!

14th April 1999 (Mailing List)

Just a little reminder that Jennifer's tournament draws, results and rankings can be e-mailed to you if you join the Jennifer Capriati WebSite mailing list. My e-mail address is mark.newman@dial.pipex.com, just drop me a line and I'll add you to the list.

12th April 1999 (WTA Rankings)

Jennifer's fall down the singles rankings after failing to defend her third round points from Amelia Island 1998 is not too worrying. She drifts four places downwards to 85th, but is not expected to play again until Hamburg at the end of the month. In doubles, Jennifer climbs a huge amount of places yet again, up forty-one to 187th, following a first round win at Amelia Island with Iva Majoli.

8th April 1999 (Amelia Island)

Jennifer and Iva Majoli lost their second round doubles match at Amelia Island to Catalina Cristea and Ruxandra Dragomir. The Romanian pairing won 6-4 6-3.

8th April 1999 (Future Events)

Jennifer is on the commitments lists for Berlin, week beginning 10th May. So it looks like she'll be taking three weeks off after Amelia Island, then returning for Hamburg, Italian Open and Berlin.

8th April 1999 (Amelia Island)

Jennifer fell to Anna Kournikova 3-6 3-6, but the match provided a strong hint that Harold Solomon's work is paying off. Kournikova had to rally from a break down in each set, and, as Jennifer herself said: 'If I had taken my time and been more relaxed, it might have been different.'

7th April 1999 (Amelia Island)

Jennifer and Iva Majoli's opponents in the second round of the doubles event at Amelia Island will be 7th-seeds Catalina Cristea (WTA #46) and Ruxandra Dragomir of Romania (WTA #48).

6th April 1999 (Amelia Island)

Jennifer will, as expected, face 9th-seed Anna Kournikova of Russia (WTA #16) in the second round. Kournikova came through her first round match against a lucky loser in straight sets. In doubles, Jennifer and Iva Majoli recovered from a slow start to defeat Aleksandra Olsza and Lilia Osterloh 2-6 6-4 6-2. Their second round opponents have yet to be decided.

6th April 1999 (Amelia Island)

Jennifer Capriati has once more teamed with Iva Majoli of Croatia (WTA #73) in the doubles event. Playing at Amelia Island they face Aleksandra Olsza of Poland (WTA #94) and Lilia Osterloh of the United States (WTA #95) in the first round. Interestingly, Jennifer has said she plans to take a month off after this event to work with her new coach, Harold Solomon. That would mean missing Hamburg, where she has a lot of points to defend, and missing a substantial portion of the clay court season, where she achieved her best results last year. Nevertheless, it is good to see that her relationship with her new coach is working so well. She is on the WTA commitments list for the qualifying draw at the Italian Open, week beginning 3rd May, so could return there (although she is also entered for the qualifying draw at Hamburg the week before). Jennifer is looking forward to playing Anna Kournikova, a possible second round match-up: 'I feel like it would be an opportunity for me.' Capriati worked hard against Sylvia Plischke yesterday, racing to a 5-0 second set lead after Plischke strained a thigh muscle. The Austrian won the next three games to worry Capriati, but Jennifer held her nerve to take the match.

5th April 1999 (Amelia Island)

Jennifer defeated Sylvia Plischke of Austria 7-5 6-3 in the first round at Amelia Island. She will now face the winner of the match between 9th-seed Anna Kournikova of Russia and Andrea Glass of Germany.

5th April 1999 (WTA Rankings)

Jennifer moves up three to a new 1999 singles high of 81st in the latest WTA rankings. With third round points to defend from last year at Amelia Island, and a potential second round encounter with Anna Kournikova she should enjoy the position while she can. A first round loss at this week's Amelia Island tournament would see Jennifer ranked back around 95th. In doubles, it's another 1999 high as she moves up two to 228th.

4th April 1999 (Amelia Island)

Jennifer has gained direct entry into the main draw at Amelia Island, and now does not need to play through qualifying. She takes on Sylvia Plischke of Austria (WTA #39) in the first round, and if she wins could face 9th-seed Anna Kournikova in the second round. Jennifer has points to defend at the tournament, having reached the third round last year. A first round loss to Plischke may well put Jennifer out of the Top 100 again.

4th April 1999 (Jennifer Capriati WebSite)

I've finally put something in the career statistics section! I'm still waiting for those of you with contacts at the WTA to get me Jennifer's career doubles results from before 1996! E-mail me if you get them!

29th March 1999 (Hilton Head/WTA Rankings)

Happy birthday to Jennifer, who is 23 today! It has been confirmed that she is not playing at Hilton Head. Her next event, injury permitting, will be Amelia Island next week, where she is scheduled to play through qualifying. In the latest WTA rankings, Jennifer reaches new 1999 highs in both singles and doubles. She moves up two to 84th in singles, and up thirty-eight to 230th in doubles.

28th March 1999 (Hilton Head)

I can't be sure yet, as I have not seen the full qualifying draw, but Jennifer Capriati does not appear to be at the Hilton Head event. She did not play a qualifying match yesterday, and is not scheduled to today. She has not been named as one of the main draw wildcards either. It would appear then, that it was a Capriati injury that forced her and Iva Majoli to withdraw from the doubles at Key Biscayne last week.

22nd March 1999 (Key Biscayne)

Jennifer Capriati is allergic to Elena Likhovtseva, it is official! Twice this year, Capriati has come up against Likhovtseva in doubles, and twice this year she and her doubles partner have handed the Russian a walkover! Capriati and Iva Majoli withdrew from their second round match against Likhovtseva and Kournikova at Key Biscayne, and, as yet, I do not know the reason. With neither Capriati or Majoli still in the singles draw, it is not possible to tell who caused the withdrawal, unless I hear about it elsewhere. Still, on the plus side, it means that Jennifer retains a 100% win-loss record in doubles for 1999, with two wins and zero losses!

21st March 1999 (Key Biscayne)

Jennifer Capriati and Iva Majoli won their opening round doubles match against Christina Singer and Helena Vildova 6-4 6-3. They looked a little shaky in the second set, when they let a 4-1 lead melt away to 4-3, but bounced back to take the match with the next two games. In the next round they have a tougher ordeal, as 2nd-seeds Anna Kournikova (WTA #5) and Elena Likhovtseva (WTA #8) of Russia wait to meet them, after a first round bye.

21st March 1999 (Future Events)

Jennifer Capriati is on the WTA commitments list for the Hamburg qualifying draw, week beginning 26th April.

19th March 1999 (Key Biscayne)

As was perhaps to be expected, Jennifer Capriati folded in spectacular style to Steffi Graf, losing 0-6 1-6 in the second round at Key Biscayne. A disappointing result, but she did defeat Talaja, and her 1999-best ranking should be improved. Let's hope that she can continue working with Harold Solomon for Hilton Head and Amelia Island, where she is playing through qualifying, and let's hope that she can win a round or two of doubles with Iva Majoli.

19th March 1999 (Key Biscayne)

From Jennifer's post match interview after her first round win at Key Biscayne, it seems that she is working with a new coach, Harold Solomon. The pair started working together just under two weeks ago. No news on what happened to Zoltan Koharsky. If anyone knows anything, let me know!

18th March 1999 (Key Biscayne)

Jennifer Capriati has defeated Silvija Talaja of Croatia 6-4 6-3 in the first round at Key Biscayne. She started strongly, building a 4-1 first set lead, and held her nerve throughout. She will now face Steffi Graf of Germany (WTA #7) in the second round. That's one to watch!

18th March 1999 (Key Biscayne)

Jennifer Capriati, who plays her first round singles match against Silvija Talaja today, has also entered the doubles draw with a wildcard at Key Biscayne. She is partnering Iva Majoli of Croatia (WTA #75), and in the first round they will face Christina Singer of Germany (WTA #113) and Helena Vildova of the Czech Republic (WTA #69). Should they win that one, they will face 2nd-seeded Russian pair Anna Kournikova and Elena Likhovtseva in the second round.

17th March 1999 (Key Biscayne)

Jennifer has a tough draw at Key Biscayne. In the first round she faces Silvija Talaja of Croatia (WTA #81) who knocked her out of the Top 100 official end-of-year rankings last year, then beat her in qualifying at Sydney in January. The score then was 6-2 3-6 3-6, so there is hope. If Jennifer wins that match though, she will find herself up against Steffi Graf.

16th March 1999 (WTA Rankings)

Jennifer moves back up one to her 1999 singles high of 86th, and climbs two to a new 1999 doubles high of 268th in the latest WTA rankings. Jennifer is in action this week at the Lipton championships, Key Biscayne.

4th March 1999 (Future Events)

Jennifer Capriati is definitely not playing at Indian Wells this week, but has been given a main draw wildcard into the Lipton Championships at Key Biscayne, week beginning 15th March.

1st March 1999 (WTA Rankings/Steven Capriati)

Jennifer Capriati dips one in both singles and doubles rankings this week, and now stands at 87th in singles, and 270th in doubles. She does not appear to be playing at Indian Wells this week. Jennifer's younger brother Steven, who last week was ranked 1307th in ATP singles, has dropped off the rankings this week, having only played one event in the past year. His career high singles ranking was 1295th on 5th October 1998.

28th February 1999 (Future Events)

Jennifer Capriati is on the WTA commitments lists for the qualifying draws at Hilton Head, week beginning 29th March, and Amelia Island, week beginning 5th April.

22nd February 1999 (WTA Rankings/Steven Capriati)

Jennifer Capriati moves up one place in the latest WTA singles rankings to 86th, but in doubles climbs a wopping 588 places to 269th following her first doubles win since 1997, at Hannover last week. Steven Capriati moves up one place to 1307th in the latest ATP singles rankings.

22nd February 1999 (Future Events)

Jennifer Capriati is not playing in Paris this week.

20th February 1999 (Future Events)

Jennifer Capriati was on the commitments list for qualifying at next week's Paris event, but the qualifying draw has just been announced and she is not in it. Whether this is because she has a main draw wildcard or is still recovering from the sickness which prompted her withdrawal from Hannover, I do not know.

18th February 1999 (Hannover)

Jennifer Capriati and Steffi Graf defaulted their quarter final match against 2nd-seeds Elena Likhovtseva of Russia (WTA #11) and Ai Sugiyama of Japan (WTA #15) after Capriati was forced to withdraw because of sickness. Nevertheless, their first round win was Jennifer's first doubles victory since 1997, and Hannover was also her first doubles quarter final since 1992.

17th February 1999 (Hannover)

Jennifer Capriati and Steffi Graf defeated the team of Sabine Appelmans and Miriam Oremans 6-4 6-4 in the first round of doubles at Hannover. It was Capriati's first doubles victory since the 1997 Australian Open. In the quarter finals they will have a tough battle against 2nd-seeds Elena Likhovtseva of Russia (WTA #11) and Ai Sugiyama of Japan (WTA #15).

16th February 1999 (Steven Capriati)

Jennifer's younger brother Steven moves up two to 1308th on the latest ATP rankings.

15th February 1999 (Hannover)

Jennifer fell at the first hurdle at Hannover, losing 4-6 2-6 to 8th-seed Barbara Schett of Austria (WTA #19).

15th February 1999 (WTA Rankings)

Jennifer stays at 87th in the latest WTA singles rankings, but moves up eight places in doubles to 857th.

15th February 1999 (Hannover)

As well as a wildcard into the singles main draw, Jennifer Capriati has also gained a wildcard into the doubles main draw, teaming with none other than Steffi Graf (Ger #147). Their first round opponents are Sabine Appelmans (Bel #36) and Miriam Oremans (Ned #37).

14th February 1999 (Future Events)

Jennifer has a wildcard into the Faber Grand Prix main draw in Hannover, Germany, starting on Monday. She will take on 8th seed Barbara Schett of Austria (WTA #19) in the first round. Capriati and Schett have played each other twice previously, in 1996 and 1998, with Capriati winning in straight sets each time. Tournament results and WTA rankings news can now be received on the Jennifer Capriati WebSite Mailing List, if you want to subscribe e-mail me at my e-mail address on the main page.

9th February 1999 (Future Events)

Jennifer Capriati is not entered in this week's WTA event in Prostejov. It has also been confirmed that she has not entered the draws for Indian Wells and Key Biscayne, though I would imagine this is because she has applied for main draw wildcards for these events.

8th February 1999 (WTA Rankings)

Jennifer climbs two to 87th in singles, and two to 865th in doubles. As far as I am aware she is not playing this week in the Czech Republic, but I have not yet seen either the qualifying or the main draw for this event.

1st February 1999 (WTA Rankings/Steven Capriati)

Slowly, but surely, Jennifer is moving back up the WTA rankings. This week she climbs four to 89th in singles, and in doubles climbs four to 867th. Her brother Steven moves up two to 1310th in the ATP rankings, and is now only weeks away from losing all his ranking points.

22nd January 1999 (Australian Open)

Maria Antonia Sanchez Lorenzo of Spain gave Jennifer something else to think about with a 6-3 6-0 third round win over WTA #3 Jana Novotna. Novotna won just eight points in the second set.

21st January 1999 (Coach/WTA/Australian Open)

Some more news on Zoltan Kuharszky, Jennifer's coach. They have been working together since December 1998, and Kuharszky worked with Anke Huber for three and a half years before that. The WTA selected Jennifer's first round Australian Open win over Evie Dominikovic as the WTA Australian Open Win of Day 1. You can read my Australian Open review now, and there will be several pictures from the Australian Open up in the next few days.

20th January 1999 (Australian Open)

Jennifer Capriati has missed out on a third round encounter with World No.3 Jana Novotna, after crashing out 6-7 (2-7) 2-6 to Maria Antonia Sanchez Lorenzo of Spain (WTA #65) in the second round.

18th January 1999 (Australian Open/WTA Rankings/Steven Capriati)

Jennifer Capriati moved into the second round after a titanic struggle against wildcard entry Evie Dominikovic of Australia (WTA #221). Capriati has questioned her own ability to close out matches, and will take consolation from a 5-7 6-3 8-6 victory. At one point, Capriati trailed 5-7 0-3, but managed to win the next nine games for a 3-0 final set lead. Dominikovic clawed her way back in, and served for the match at 6-5 in the third set, but Capriati gritted her teeth for the next three games, and only her second Grand Slam singles win since 1993. Next up is Maria Antonia Sanchez Lorenzo of Spain (WTA #65). Also, Jennifer's loss last week to Silvija Talaja was put into perspective when the Croatian almost beat Venus Williams in the Australian Open first round, Williams eventually triumphing 3-6 6-3 9-7. Jennifer has more cause to celebrate too, as she climbs seven places to 93rd in the latest singles rankings, following her win over Top 30 player Henrieta Nagyova last week. It's her highest ranking since 1997. In doubles, Capriati climbs two to 871st. She is not entered in the women's doubles draw at the Australian Open. In the ATP rankings, Jennifer's brother Steven stays at 1312th.

15th January 1999 (Australian Open)

Jennifer should be celebrating after she was handed a fantastic draw at the Australian Open. If she makes it past wildcard entry Evie Dominikovic of Australia (WTA #221) in the first round, she will play the winner of the match between Sandra Cacic of the United States (WTA #84) and Maria Antonia Sanchez Lorenzo of Spain (WTA #66) in the second round. A possible third round encounter with Jana Novotna of the Czech Republic (WTA #3) lies ahead. It's really the best possible draw she could have hoped for - a wildcard in the first round, low ranked opponent in the second round, and not meeting a seed until the third round. Best of luck, Jennifer!

13th January 1999 (Sydney/Steven Capriati)

Read my review of Jennifer's progress at the 1999 Sydney tournament. On the latest ATP Rankings, Jennifer's brother Steven moves up twelve to 1312th.

11th January 1999 (WTA Rankings)

Jennifer drops one place to 100th in the latest singles rankings, and stays at 873rd on the latest doubles rankings.

10th January 1999 (Sydney)

Jennifer Capriati is not entered in the doubles draw at Sydney. Also, as a matter of interest, Jennifer did not need to use the offer of a wildcard to enter the qualifying draw at Sydney, as the cut-off point ended up being lower than her current ranking of 99th. Startling to see Lisa Raymond (WTA #27) forced through qualifying (and failing to do so!).

9th January 1999 (Sydney)

Jennifer Capriati has lost to Silvija Talaja of Croatia (WTA Ranked 85th) in the second round of qualifying at the Adidas International in Sydney. Jennifer lost in three sets, 6-2 3-6 3-6.

9th January 1999 (Sydney)

Jennifer has started 1999 in fine style, beating 2nd-seed Henrieta Nagyova of the Slovak Republic (WTA Ranked 28th) in the first round of qualifying, 7-6 (7-4) 6-2. A win over a Top 30 player will surely give her confidence. Interestingly, in the next round she will face Silvija Talaja of Croatia (WTA Ranked 85th), whom you may remember pushed Jennifer out of the end-of-year Top 100 rankings by doing so well at the WTA event in Pattaya.

5th January 1999 (Coach)

The big news is that Jennifer has finally got herself a coach. She will be working with Zoltan Koharski throughout 1999.

3rd January 1999 (Future Events)

Jennifer has not entered this week's Auckland tournament, even though she was on the commitments list for the qualifying event, and was offered a main draw wildcard. She will make her 1999 debut next week in Sydney, with a wildcard entry into the qualifying draw.

1st January 1999 (WTA Rankings)

The WTA rankings for the 28th December are unchanged, so Jennifer stays at 99th in singles and 874th in doubles.
